| 3 | Baise-Moi | Coralie | NR | 2000 | Remstar Canada | Adult | |
Baise-Moi CoralieRated: NR Date Added: 04 Feb 2007 Summary: Not for the faint-hearted. "Baise-Moi" defies categories--it features pornographic sex scenes and violent shootings, but it won't fit anyone's definition of an erotic thriller. After separately committing murders, two French women join together in a spree of crime and sex. Because both have endured abuse at the hands of men, the movie seems to start as a self-righteous parable--but the women's actions quickly degenerate into amoral, near random killings, with women shot as casually as men. One reviewer described "Baise-Moi" as ""Thelma & Louise" with actual penetration," but it's actually "Thelma & Louise" without Hollywood sentiment. By refusing to condemn or justify the protagonists' actions, and by depicting both sex and violence with unglamorous realism, "Baise-Moi" forces the viewer to respond in the most contradictory and basic ways. You may find the lead characters surprisingly sympathetic. Jarring, unsettling, and well worth watching. "--Bret Fetzer"

Beyond the Valley of the Dolls Russ MeyerRated: X Writer: Roger Ebert, Russ Meyer Date Added: 04 Feb 2007 Languages: English Subtitles: English, Spanish Sound: Dolby Digital 2.0 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: This time... they've really gone Summary: One never tires of watching Russ Meyer's "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls", a distant relative of Jaqueline Susann's bestselling novel, "Valley of the Dolls", and its filmic counterpart, "Valley of the Dolls". Kelly McNamara (Dolly Read), Casey Anderson (Cynthia Myers), and Petronella Danforth (Marcia McBroome), star as the hot female trio who clumsily navigate Hollywood during the Swingin' Sixties to promote their band, The Carrie Nations. Written by Rogert Ebert, Ebert calls the film the "first rock-horror exploitation musical," because "BVD", as it's called by fans, encompasses all that was sexy, funny, hip, schlocky, stylish, and horrific about America's most interesting cultural period. "BVD" can be viewed as a Sixties' artifact, packed with consummate party scenes (and a cameo appearance by Strawberry Alarm Clock), as the original skin flick, as a proto-cult classic, or as a benchmark in American cinema, since it is actually well- written, artfully shot, and finely edited. This special edition re-release includes a second disc comprised of five featurettes, whose topics include Meyers' biography, the Carrie Nations music as soundtrack, Casey and Roxanne's titillating lesbian love scene, and the political climate during the Sixties. Revisiting "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls", especially after Russ Meyer's recent death, reminds viewers to treasure his visionary obsession with female beauty. "--Trinie Dalton"

Flesh Gordon Howard ZiehmRated: X Writer: Michael Benveniste Date Added: 08 Mar 2007 Sound: Dolby Digital 2.0 Picture Format: Pan & Scan Comments: Not to be confused with the original "Flash Gordon" Summary: Directors Howard Ziehm and Michael Benveniste draw from the same cliffhanging "Flash Gordon" serials of the 1930s as the glitzy 1980 tongue-in-cheek space opera for their soft-core spoof. Hockey hero Flesh Gordon and often-naked love interest Dale Ardor join Dr. Jerkoff in his battle against the mad Emperor Wang from the planet Porno, who has unleashed his diabolical sex ray on the Earth. Full of toilet humor, juvenile sexual innuendo, and unending naked romps and orgies, it's hardly in the same company as the Mel Brooks genre goofs "Blazing Saddles" and "Young Frankenstein". But amidst the slack direction, flat performances, and grungy photography are some lovingly crafted low-tech effects, including marvelous stop-motion creatures from Jim Danforth and spaceships courtesy of future Oscar winners Greg Jein and Dennis Muren. The film's best sequence is a "King Kong" tribute with a giant rampaging satyr (voiced by an uncredited Craig T. Nelson, who ad-libs quips in a cultured but expletive-filled whine) kidnapping Dale as Flesh buzzes him his phallic space ship. All the restoration in the world won't make this dark, grainy, bargain-basement parody look any better, but the retro effects, inspired score, and playful attitude make this silly sex romp a kitschy cult item from the randy 1970s. Sadomania Jesus FrancoRated: NR Writer: Günter Ebert, Jesus Franco Date Added: 21 Oct 2007 Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: A couple of young newlyweds take a wrong turn in a Mediterranean country and discover that they have trespassed onto the grounds of a prison for women. Black transsexual Ajita Wilson plays the warden who decides to throw the blonde wife in jail and, incredibly, to let the husband go. Why, so he can come back or go to complain somewhere? Most of the gorgeous inmates are fair-skinned. They all labor in a rock quarry under the blazing sun topless with cut-off jeans. How do they keep from having their skin burned off by sunburn? The governor of the province and his wife are sadists who use the prison inmates to satisfy their perverse desires. The movie is a veritable orgy of depravity. The action includes lesbianism, sex under coercion, false imprisonment, white slavery, hunting women as sport, brutality, etc. Franco has a role as a gay pimp. Despite some obviously outrageous and even ridiculous aspects this movie works for me. It is quite similar to Ilsa, the Wicked Warden. Franco is pretty good at these WIP type movies.

The TakersRated: X Date Added: 18 Oct 2007 Sound: MP3 Summary: Booby Trap (1973, 90 min.) - It's time to kiss and go boom! A cheerfully insane ex-marine hates teenage "freaks and nuts" so much he steals 40 land mines and turns the desert site of an impending rock festival into one big Booby Trap! Headquartered in a stolen motor home, the cackling loon (played waaaay over the top by "Please Don't Eat My Mother" director Carl Monson) also blows up a hitchhiking hippie chick just for the fun of it. His anti-social activities trigger a chain reaction all the way from the military to a Sunset Strip topless bar, with the site of this intended massacre besieged by his cocktail waitress ex-wife, her shot-in-the-shoulder boyfriend, two out-for-blood mobsters, and a big sissy with stolen money. "The Takers" (1972, 78 min.) - After a breakfast of LSD and hitchhikers, The Takers--two berserk bikers--decide to go upscale when they spot suburban housewife Laura and bachelorette Barbi, follow them to Laura's home, and invite themselves in: "We're gonna have us a party with some educated social-type broads!" And party they do until Laura's hubbie (Monson again!) unexpectedly shows up to settle things with some shotgun vengeance and... well, one of the goofiest, most startling endings of any motion picture! Two demented drive-in delights from the vaults of Harry Novak, both "Booby Trap" and "The Takers" are best summed up by the lovely Miss Barbi: "Listen, honey, these two are freak outs!"

Allegro Non Troppo Bruno BozzettoRated: PG Writer: Bruno Bozzetto, Guido Manuli Date Added: 30 Jan 2007 Languages: Italian Subtitles: English Sound: MP3 Summary: Nominally, "Allegro Non Troppo" is an Italian spoof of Disney's classic "Fantasia", and with its commentary on the human condition and its consequences, the film goes in thematic directions Disney would never have touched. Interspersed with the animation are black-and-white segments that involve a dictatorial conductor, a mousy animator, an orchestra full of old ladies, and a blowhard director. The animator is Italian comic Maurizio Nichetti, and the style is broad slapstick humor that stands in sharp contrast to the animated parts. Synced to "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun" is a vignette involving a satyr and his efforts to attract nymphs while fighting the effects of age, set perfectly to the mood of the piece. "Valse Triste" is set to the story of an abandoned cat as he wanders a derelict (war-torn?) building and remembers how things were when he had a more comfortable life. An incredibly imaginative segment is set to Ravel's "Bolero"; astronauts drop a Coke bottle on a planet and the story of evolution is traced, beginning in the bottle. A piece set to Stravinsky's "The Firebird" begs the question: what if it were a perfect world and Adam and Eve had resisted the temptation of the apple in the Garden of Eden? The style of the animation calls to mind late-'60s pop-art icon Peter Max, "Yellow Submarine", and even the paintings of Bosch; what "Allegro Non Troppo" lacks in the visual detail of the Disney film, it makes up for in inventiveness, emotional depth, and wit. Be advised, though, that many segments are more adult in theme and not very suitable for kids. The pratfalls and gags of the live-action interludes seem out of place until they provide some relief from the pathos of some of the animation (like "Valse Triste," a real tear-jerker). This is an important animated film that has been somewhat neglected after its popularity in the '70s, and a must-see for animation fans. "--Jerry Renshaw"

Dark Fury - The Chronicles of Riddick Peter ChungRated: NR Writer: David Twohy, Brett Matthews, Jim Wheat, Ken Wheat Date Added: 30 Jul 2007 Languages: English Subtitles: French, Spanish Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: Taking a page from "The Animatrix", "Dark Fury" is part of a new trend of bridging theatrical sequels. As an official product of a franchise, the 35-minute anime benefits from having the original actors voice the characters, including Vin Diesel as Riddick. This story opens with the new action hero and the two other survivors of "Pitch Black" already caught by a giant spaceship filled with dread. The sinewy leader has a unique--and creepy--jail for master villains and she has her sights set on Riddick. The film--indeed the series--is indebted to animator Peter Chung, who brings his techno style from his "Aeon Flux" series. His smooth animation for Riddick doesn't reinvent the character as much as give him a new, appealing fluidity. As anime goes, there's nothing really new here--plenty of action, cool killers, and dramatic spurts of blood--but it's a building block for how this genre might enliven movie series and sequels in the future. Dinosaur Eric Leighton, Ralph ZondagRated: PG Writer: Walon Green, Thom Enriquez, John Harrison, Robert Nelson Jacobs, Ralph Zondag, Tamara Lusher, Shirley Pierce, Rhett Reese Date Added: 28 Feb 2007 Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: You have never seen anything like this. Summary: Dinosaurs come alive like never before in this costly computer-animated film from Disney. After a breathtaking opening (a dino egg is kidnapped), the film changes style; realistic dinosaurs are given human characteristics and voices. The kidnapped egg grows into an iguanodon named Aladar (voiced by D.B. Sweeney), who is raised by lemurs (shades of "Tarzan") on a lush island void of other dinosaurs. When a meteorite destroys their island home in a thrilling sequence, the lemur family and Aladar become part of a dinosaur troop roaming the mainland deserts looking for the lush nesting grounds (shades of the fourth installment of the "Land Before Time" series and "Fantasia"). Disney's usual mix of modern language (one lemur calls himself "a love monkey") is present, as is its typical capital punishment law: anyone against our forward-thinking hero (or even disagreeing with him) ends up dead. Curiously, the meanies, a pair of carnotaurs following the group, are nameless and voiceless. This more realistic approach might have been a bigger wow, as in the BBC's "Walking with Dinosaurs", which looked extraordinary with only a fraction of the budget. The complexity and scope of "Dinosaur"'s visual scale is impressive, and group shots and a point-of-view angle are stunning. Rated PG for general intensity, the film should be a favorite for the 6- to 11-year-old set. "--Doug Thomas"
