The 300 Spartans Rudolph MatéRated: Unrated Writer: Gian Paolo Callegari, Remigio Del Grosso Date Added: 27 Jan 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: The futile yet inspiring stand of 300 Greek soldiers against the hugest army ever assembled in the ancient world inspired this typical example of Hollywood epic movie-making. King Leonidas of Sparta (Richard Egan, "Demetrius and the Gladiators"), prevented by political squabbling from sending his entire army to defend the narrow pass of Thermopylae, sets out with his personal bodyguard to fight off the ambitious Persian king, Xerxes. Along the way are a pair of young lovers, scantily clad dancing girls, and treachery though a secret mountain path. "The 300 Spartans", made in 1961, has an overstated cold war subtext--there's much talk of freedom vs. slavery--and there are a few too many shots of armored men marching through the Greek countryside, but the historical conflict has a fundamentally stirring quality. Also featuring Sir Ralph Richardson ("Dr. Zhivago", "Dragonslayer") as a wily Athenian politician. "--Bret Fetzer"

Someone suggests, after a hectic girl fight in a kitchen between a Nubian and a Viking slave, as a joke, that they should fight in the arena, instead of male gladiators. The idea is approved, though - and a female "Spartacus" theme follows.

Grandeur! Glory! Summary: This classical peplum tells a fictitious story set in 490 BC, the time of the Medic Wars during which Persian armies sweep the Ancient world. Having brought home to Athens the Olympic victor's laurel crown, Philippides joins as commander the Sacred Guard, which is expected to defend the city-state's liberty, a year after the chasing of the tyrant Hippias. Athenian supporters of Hippias conspire, hoping to side Philippides by marriage to Theocrites' expensive servant Charis, and thus neutralize the guard. She fails to seduce him, as his heart is already taken by a young girl before the learns her name is Andromeda, daughter of Creuso. Everything personal is likely to be put on hold when the news breaks that the Persian King of kings Darius's vast army is marching on Greece, hoping its internal division will make its conquest a walk-over. Theocrites reproaches Miltiades to hold back the sacred guard to defend the Pallas temple after a likely defeat, and proposes instead to negotiate terms with Darius, but is told an alliance with Sparta could save the Hellenic nation. Philippides makes the journey and survives a fiendish attempt on his life by conspirators; he returns with Sparta's engagement during the Persian attack in far greater numbers on Militiades valiant troops. Charis, left for dead after overhearing Darius's orders, reaches the camp to tell that the Persian fleet, now commanded by traitor Theocrites, is heading for Piraeus to take Athens. Miltiades sends Philippides ahead to hold out with the sacred guard until his hopefully victorious troops arrive, and after his perilous journey back they do a great job, proving superior athletes can do better then traditional naval ramming tactics ...

SEE Hercules fight off the savage love-starved Amazon women! SEE the seductive Amazons lure men to voluptuous revels and violent deaths! SEE the powerful Hercules crush the savage ape-men who guard the shrine of the Golden Fleece! Summary: Wish the Steve Reeves Hercules films were just a little more robust than they are: Reeves is magnificent to look at, and the women are beautiful. But somehow, these Hercules films don't create the same feeling in people that they get from Harryhausen's "Jason and the Argonauts", and the more elaborate spectacles like "Ben Hur". Fans of Reeves, and the genre, may object most to the pan-and-scan versions of these movies presented here. Bad prints, too, and this is a shame, because the color photography and widescreen were a huge part of the appeal of these amiably modest spectacles. If you've been waiting for "Hercules" to come out on a restored DVD, this isn't it, sadly. Reeves and his fans deserved better.

| 2626 | Spartacus | Stanley Kubrick | Howard Fast, Dalton Trumbo, Calder Willingham, Peter Ustinov | PG-13 | 1960 | Universal Studios | Peblum |
Spartacus Stanley KubrickRated: PG-13 Writer: Howard Fast, Dalton Trumbo, Calder Willingham, Peter Ustinov Date Added: 19 Oct 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Letterbox Comments: They trained him to kill for their pleasure. . .but they trained him a little too well. . . Summary: Stanley Kubrick was only 31 years old when Kirk Douglas (star of Kubrick's classic "Paths of Glory") recruited the young director to pilot this epic saga, in which the rebellious slave Spartacus (played by Douglas) leads a freedom revolt against the decadent Roman Empire. Kubrick would later disown the film because it was not a personal project--he was merely a director-for-hire--but "Spartacus" remains one of the best of Hollywood's grand historical epics. With an intelligent screenplay by then-blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo (from a novel by Howard Fast), its message of moral integrity and courageous conviction is still quite powerful, and the all-star cast (including Charles Laughton in full toga) is full of entertaining surprises. Fully restored in 1991 to include scenes deleted from the original 1960 release, the full-length "Spartacus" is a grand-scale cinematic marvel, offering some of the most awesome battles ever filmed and a central performance by Douglas that's as sensitively emotional as it is intensely heroic. Jean Simmons plays the slave woman who becomes Spartacus's wife, and Peter Ustinov steals the show with his frequently hilarious, Oscar-winning performance as a slave trader who shamelessly curries favor with his Roman superiors. The restored version also includes a formerly deleted bathhouse scene in which Laurence Olivier plays a bisexual Roman senator (with restored dialogue dubbed by Anthony Hopkins) who gets hot and bothered over a slave servant played by Tony Curtis. These and other restored scenes expand the film to just over three hours in length. Despite some forgivable lulls, this is a rousing and substantial drama that grabs and holds your attention. Breaking tradition with sophisticated themes and a downbeat (yet eminently noble) conclusion, "Spartacus" is a thinking person's epic, rising above mere spectacle with a story as impressive as its widescreen action and Oscar-winning sets. Ulysses Mario Camerini, Mario BavaRated: Writer: Franco Brusati, Mario Camerini, Ennio De Concini, Hugh Gray, Ben Hecht, Homer, Ivo Perilli, Irwin Shaw Date Added: 13 Mar 2008 Sound: AAC Picture Format: Pan & Scan Comments: One of the greatest adventures of world literature! Packed with fury...excitement...cunning and tempestuous love! Summary: This vintage Italian production of "Ulysses" is best enjoyed as Homeric adventure for kids. While "The Odyssey" is handled with admirable fidelity, you may suppress a chuckle when Kirk Douglas, as the titular Greek hero, speaks English "and" Italian, dubbing himself in English! Looking like a "Spartacus" wannabe, Douglas brings appropriate gravity to his classically mythic exploits. Having sacked Troy, Ulysses and his stalwart crew set sail for Ithaca, only to be delayed for a decade by such epic distractions as a giant Cyclops (a memorable highlight), the madness-inducing Sirens, and the deceptive Circe, who turns men into swine. Meanwhile, Ulysses's loyal wife Penelope (Silvana Mangano) is being wooed by suitors (including Anthony Quinn, fresh from Fellini's "La Strada"), making Ulysses's homecoming an urgent necessity. Resembling a Ray Harryhausen fantasy without "dynamation," this ambitious film boasts impressive special effects (for its time), and the kind of lavish sets and costumes that were once an Italian specialty. American Me Edward James OlmosRated: R Writer: Floyd Mutrux, Floyd Mutrux Date Added: 30 Jan 2007 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: In prison they are the law. On the streets they are the power. Summary: Actor-turned-director Edward James Olmos set out to spread the word against the destructiveness of gang violence with this 1992 gritty drama. Set in the barrios of East Los Angeles, he attempts to cover 30 years in the life of a family with strong gang ties. This brutally realistic story may not intentionally glorify violence, but it offers no answers. (Olmos actually shot the prison scenes in Folsom, which explains their harsh reality.) Great performances though, especially by Olmos and William Forsythe. Olmos plays a gang leader released from prison who is finally in touch with himself, only to realize it is too late. The one major problem with this well-intentioned flick is that it is rated R for violence, nudity, and profanity. Therefore, the kids who most need its message are not, in theory, the ones who will see it. "--Rochelle O'Gorman"

Bad Boys Rick RosenthalRated: R Writer: Richard Di Lello Date Added: 18 Oct 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: In their world, if you're 17 and still alive you're a survivor [Video Australia] Summary: Prior to starring in the hard-edged 1983 drama "Bad Boys", Sean Penn had proven his early promise in the TV movie "The Killing of Randy Webster", played a memorable supporting role in "Taps" (with fellow newcomer Tom Cruise), and created the definitive California surfer dude as the perpetually stoned Jeff Spicoli in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High". But it was "Bad Boys" that cemented Penn's reputation as a rare talent--an actor whose skill transcended his youth, revealing a depth and maturity that the majority of his acting peers could only aspire to. That gravity and emotional dimension is evident throughout Penn's performance here as Mick O'Brien, a chronic offender whose path to a Chicago juvenile corrections facility seems utterly preordained. The institution is hardly conducive to reformation--it's a jail for problem kids, and a cauldron for all the societal ills that sent kids there in the first place. Mick's there because he was involved in a shootout during a botched robbery of drugs from rival street gangster Paco Moreno (Esai Morales), whose little brother was killed when Mick accidentally ran him over with his getaway car.

Brute Force Jules DassinRated: Unrated Writer: Richard Brooks, Robert Patterson Date Added: 22 Oct 2007 Sound: AAC Picture Format: Academy Ratio Comments: Raw! Rough! Ruthless! Summary: Jules Dassin's brooding, brutal drama about a prison wound to the breaking point by a sadistic captain of the guards is a classic film noir as well as one of the greatest prison films ever made. Burt Lancaster (in only his third film but already commanding the screen like a pro) is the savvy prison veteran whose clashes with Hume Cronyn (the ambitious guard with a god complex) land him first in solitary then in the claustrophobic drain pipe, a muddy, airless work detail that slowly kills every man assigned to it. With the help of his cellmate buddies and former gangland boss Charles Bickford he hatches a plan to break out, but Cronyn has his own plans for the unbreakable prisoner. Dassin's oppressive prison is thick with atmosphere: cavernous buildings and halls that echo with the footsteps of inmates and the clanking of bars, overcrowded cells that seem to close in on the men, a busy machine shop where the film's most memorable scene takes place--the ruthless assassination of a stoolie in a pounding metal press. Cinematographer William Daniels, a master of Hollywood's soft-focus glamour, creates a harsh, hard-edged look for the film, softened only by looming shadows. A sense of doom hovers over everything, culminating in an explosive finale, but the barbaric, brutish violence hangs in the air long after the film is over. "--Sean Axmaker"

Caged Heat Jonathan DemmeRated: R Writer: Jonathan Demme Date Added: 16 Oct 2007 Sound: AAC Picture Format: Pan & Scan Comments: Women's prison U.S.A. - Rape Riot and Revenge! White Hot Desires melting cold prison steel! Summary: The greatest women-in-prison film ever made, "Caged Heat" takes the traditional sex-and-violence formula of gorgeous babes behind bars, gratuitous nudity, and degradation at the hands of beastly guards and a corrupt system, and transforms it into rebel burst of grrrl power. Jonathan Demme's directorial debut, made for Roger Corman's New World Pictures in the glory days of 1970s drive-in moviemaking, wedges his message of empowerment in between the showers and the shock treatments. Russ Meyer alumnus Erica Gavin stars with tough cookie Juanita Brown as they lead the brassy set of cellblock babes through prison breaks and bank robberies, all pulled off with smarts and sass. These women are in control and manage to keep their dignity (if not their clothes) in this fast-paced, hard-edged picture, but it's Barbara Steele who practically steals the film as the repressed warden whose dreams look like a road show version of "Cabaret". Whitmore II Date Added: 04 Apr 2007 Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: Avery had to drop out of college to support his girlfriend Krista and their son Jordan, but he saved his money and is eager to get back in the game. He has returned to the swim meet circuit and is now having the time of his life. One night, after winning a race, he is approached by a college scout. Thrilled, he goes out with his friends Dre and Cashmere to celebrate. A gun used in a drive-by shooting somehow finds its way into Cashmere's car. The cops arrive, and soon the trio land in jail. Cashmere has an easier time adapting to penitentiary life than Dre and Avery, who are more unfamiliar with the gang life that pervades the environment. Avery clings to Krista and Jordan as reasons to hold on, but there is only one man who can, and will, fight on his behalf - Charles, his swimming scout, who believes in his innocence without question. Regardless of the outcome, Avery must learn to hold on to his ideals after the brutality he has witnessed.

Prison on Fire Ringo LamRated: R Writer: Yin Nam Date Added: 17 Jun 2007 Languages: Chinese Subtitles: English Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 Picture Format: Letterbox Summary: This solid 1987 big-house melodrama costars Tony Leung Kar-fei ("The Lover") as a bespectacled innocent, perhaps mentally impaired, who is unjustly imprisoned. Behind bars he is befriended by a life-loving reprobate (Chow Yun-fat) who displays his cool by rolling a lit cigarette over his knuckles, in a risky variation on the George Raft silver dollar trick. Director Ringo Lam jacks up the visceral tension effectively, even though Leung's character is too naive to be true. Chow is in top form, however, enduring even more brutal beatings than in "A Better Tomorrow". All prison exposé films are essentially the same, but this one has a few unusual wrinkles: there are no intimations of that American slammer staple, homosexuality, though close fraternal attachments are suggested in a lyrical Christmas party dance sequence. Riot in Cell Block 11 Don SiegelRated: Writer: Richard Collins Date Added: 06 Nov 2009 Sound: AAC Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Walter Wanger's RAW-TRUTH EXPOSE! Summary: Producer Walter Wanger, who had just been released from a prison term after shooting a man he believed was having an affair with his wife, wanted to make a film about the appalling conditions he saw while he was incarcerated. He got together with director Don Siegel and they came up with this film, in which several prison inmates, to protest brutal guards, substandard food, overcrowding and barely livable conditions, stage an uprising, in which most of the inmates join, and take several guards hostage. Negotiations between the inmates and prison officials are stymied, however, by politicians interfering with the prison administration, and by dissension and infighting in the inmates' own ranks.

Women's Prison Lewis SeilerRated: Unrated Writer: Jack DeWitt, Crane Wilbur Date Added: 10 Apr 2010 Sound: AAC Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: DRAMATIC-SHOCKER! Summary: Moore works both sides of the noir fence in this double-disc set; in the perilously campy "Women's Prison" (1955), she's a gutsy con who offers to rescue naive new inmate Phyllis Thaxter from hard-bitten warden Ida Lupino. The presence of both actresses, in combination with such noir/B favorites as Audrey Totter and Jan Sterling, and some hysterically over-the-top dialogue and scenarios, make the film a must-see for devotees of psychotronic cinema.
