Art of the Devil Tanit JitnukulRated: Unrated Writer: SirLaosson Dara, Ghost Gypsy Date Added: 29 Jul 2007 Languages: Thai Subtitles: English Summary: So ... given my rather glowing review of "Long Khong" (Art of the Devil 2), was "Kong Len Khong" (Art of the Devil) any good? Nah ... the first Art of the Devil turns out to be just a pedestrian Thai horror movie with little horror, a predictable story, some gore (bleeding gullets and razor blades galore) but not much else. Here's the Cliffs Notes summary: A pretty young woman is introduced to a rich middle aged man, and proceeds to have a torrid affair with him. She gets pregnant and blackmails him into paying her off. He gets upset and arranges for her to be gang-raped by three of his rich friends. She gets more upset and pays an evil shaman to bump him and his family (and his lecherous friends and their families as well) off in nasty ways (picture bloody gullets, razor blades, and rusty nails). Then she gets even MORE upset when the estate of the rich man goes to his common-law wife's family (i.e. "unofficial" second wife i.e. concubine/mistress). And so the evil shaman gets more business, casting a love spell on the eldest (illegitimate) son so that his conniving client can sleep her way into the family and then kill them off one by one with the aim of ultimately inheriting the late rich man's estate. But she did not count on the late rich man's plucky young (illegitimate) daughter and her inquisitive reporter friend. And so both her and her evil shaman get their comeuppance in due course, after a lot of eels, cowhides, bloody gullets, razor blades and rusty nails again (which obviously don't mixed well), and gunshots. End of movie. I did say it was a rather pedestrian Thai horror movie.

The Devil's Nightmare Jean BrisméeRated: R Writer: Jean Brismée, Pierre-Claude Garnier Date Added: 29 Jul 2007 Comments: Can You Be Possessed By The Devil? Summary: Seven travelers stranded in the Italian countryside accept the hospitality of a kindly castle lord, but what horror awaits them: the family has a curse on it that dooms the eldest daughter of each generation to become an agent of the devil, and guess who's coming home. After a striking opening scene (involving a Nazi officer in 1944 overseeing the birth of his child, which turns out to be... an accursed daughter!), this horror tale drags along at a glacial pace until the visitors settle in enough to take a little time out for sex, which serves as an appetizer to sadistic murders. The guests, ostensibly representative of the Seven Deadly Sins, die in appropriately thematic twists at first, though after gluttony, greed, and lust the point gets stretched. This low-budget example of horrotica has its entertaining moments, an appropriately lurid style (courtesy of Belgian director Jean Brismee), and even an appearance by former French matinee idol Jean Servais ("Beauty and the Beast"). Included are trailers for this and three other Italian exploitation films and an extended introduction by British horror hostess Eileen Daly (which was actually recorded for a different film!), a black-leather Elvira with a whip and a penchant for kink that may not be to the tastes of all audiences. Exorcism: The Possession of Gail Bowers Leigh SlawnerRated: R Writer: Leigh Slawner Date Added: 07 Mar 2007 Summary: This film reeks of stupidity. Puts me in mind of the "Gingerdead Man". The latter being far superior, in an inferior sort of way, you understand. The acting is silly and forced. The set design, if you'd call it that, is inane and gives the impression that a few kids from the location neighborhood decorated the "room" for a haunted house (take special notice of the bedsheet draped along the window). The fog machine used to simulate cold is ridiculous, especially since there was no "breath" visible when the actors spoke their stupid lines. The psychiatrist friend making house calls? Please. The writing, did I mention the writing? Lord help us from this film, deliver us all. The gore scenes were obviously immature. The two sets of breasts shown were so not needed and only pressed that fact "they" were included to induce young men to rent this film. The CLIMAX was droning and the central character priest was laughable within the context of him trying to be serious. This film was a joke, not even the laughable type. It was horrid and should be avoided at all cost. This film should even be avoided by those who are masochistic. Stupid bull@#$%. Eye rolling, at best.

The Exorcist William FriedkinRated: R Writer: William Peter Blatty Date Added: 30 Jul 2007 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Something beyond comprehension is happening to a little girl on this street, in this house. A man has been called for as a last resort to try and save her. That man is The Exorcist. Summary: Director William Friedkin was a hot ticket in Hollywood after the success of "The French Connection", and he turned heads (in more ways than one) when he decided to make "The Exorcist" as his follow-up film. Adapted by William Peter Blatty from his controversial bestseller, this shocking 1973 thriller set an intense and often-copied milestone for screen terror with its unflinching depiction of a young girl (Linda Blair) who is possessed by an evil spirit. Jason Miller and Max von Sydow are perfectly cast as the priests who risk their sanity and their lives to administer the rites of demonic exorcism, and Ellen Burstyn plays Blair's mother, who can only stand by in horror as her daughter's body is wracked by satanic disfiguration. One of the most frightening films ever made with a soundtrack that's guaranteed to curl your blood, "The Exorcist" was mysteriously plagued by troubles during production, and the years have not diminished its capacity to disturb even the most stoical viewers. Don't say you weren't warned! "--Jeff Shannon"

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension W.D. RichterRated: PG Writer: Earl Mac Rauch Date Added: 28 Mar 2007 Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Beings from Another Dimension have invaded your world. Summary: "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai: Across the 8th Dimension" is one of the most agreeably insane movies ever made. Peter Weller stars as Buckaroo, an acclaimed neurosurgeon, particle physicist, and, of course, rock star. He travels with the Hong Kong Cavaliers, a band of hard-rocking scientists who are also really good dressers. Buckaroo's interdimensional experiments with his Operation Overthruster throw him (and the Earth) straight into the middle of an alien war, and before you know it, he's got just a few hours to save the world. Confused? Hang on, we're only 10 minutes into the movie. "Buckaroo Banzai" hurls you right into the middle of its comic-book universe and keeps going at a breakneck pace. It's chock-full of overlapping jokes (even as we're trying to make sense of Dr. Lizardo's hospital room, a voice calmly announces that "lithium is no longer available on credit" over the PA system), hilarious throwaway dialogue ("You're like Jerry Lewis: you give me hope to carry on."), and weirdness just for the sheer joy of it ("Why is there a watermelon there?" "I'll tell you later."). You'll want to watch it at least twice--there's just no way to catch everything the first time around. Ellen Barkin has a terrific time doing a dead-on film noir moll parody as Penny Priddy, and John Lithgow turns in a brilliant manic performance as Dr. Lizardo/John Whorfin. There is no reason not to own this movie unless you are cold and dead inside. Laugh while you can, Monkey Boys. "--Ali Davis"

Aeon Flux Karyn KusamaRated: PG-13 Writer: Phil Hay, Matt Manfredi, Peter Chung Date Added: 29 Jul 2007 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: The Perfect World Meets The Perfect Assassin Summary: Like the animated series it's based on, "Aeon Flux" is the kind of sci-fi that's best appreciated by the MTV generation. It's a serious attempt at stylized, futuristic action/adventure (the title character, played by Charlize Theron, is essentially a female James Bond for the cyberpunk era) and taken for what it is, it's not all that bad. The action takes place in the year 2415, four centuries after a virus nearly decimated the human race, leaving only five million survivors in a utopian city called Bregna. Aeon belongs to the Monicans, a secret rebel resistance force that is struggling to destroy the Goodchild regime led by its namesake, Trevor Goodchild (Martin Csokas), the ruler of Bregna and a descendant of the man who found a cure for the deadly virus. As instructed by the Handler (Frances McDormand, gamely playing along in ridiculous sci-fi regalia), Aeon is assigned to assassinate Goodchild, but there are deeper secrets to be discovered, and conspiracies to be foiled. This leads director Karyn Kusama (who fared much better with her debut feature "Girlfight") to indulge in all sorts of routine action and fast-paced gunplay, but the elusive pleasures of "Aeon Flux" are mostly found in the sleek athleticism of Theron and costar Sophie Okonedo (as a fellow Monican), who commit themselves 100% to roles that are dramatically flat yet physically dynamic. Other highlights include Aeon's high-tech gadgetry (including an eyeball that doubles as a microsocope) and the amusing sight of Pete Postlethwaite in a costume resembling a construction-site disposal tube, but "Flux" fans may wonder what happened to the surreal, chromium sheen future that gave the MTV series its visionary appeal. As a live-action feature, "Aeon Flux" is a miscalculated exercise in cheesy style and dour tone, but it's entertaining enough to earn a small cadre of admirers. "--Jeff Shannon"

Alien vs Predator Paul W.S. AndersonRated: PG-13 Writer: Dan O'Bannon, Ronald Shusett Date Added: 30 Jan 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Whoever wins... We lose. Summary: In delivering PG-13-rated excitement, "Alien vs. Predator" is an acceptably average science-fiction action thriller with some noteworthy highlights, even if it squanders its opportunity to intelligently combine two popular and R-rated franchises. Rabid fans can justifiably ask "Is that all there is?" after a decade of development hell and eager anticipation, but we're compensated by reasonably logical connections to the "Alien" legacy and the still-kicking "Predator" franchise (which hinted at "AVP" rivalry at the end of "Predator 2"); some cleverly claustrophobic sets, tense atmosphere and impressive digital effects; and a climactic "AVP" smackdown that's not half bad. This disposable junk should've been better, but nobody who's seen "Mortal Kombat" or "Resident Evil" should be surprised by writer-director Paul W.S. Anderson's lack of imagination. As a brisk, 90-minute exercise in generic thrills, however, Anderson's work is occasionally impressive... right up to his shameless opening for yet another sequel. "--Jeff Shannon"

The Alligator People Roy Del RuthRated: Unrated Date Added: 22 Oct 2008 Sound: AAC Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: When Jane's husband disembarks from a passenger train immediately after their wedding and disappears without a trace, troubling questions are raised. How could his face, mangled beyond recognition in a plane crash during the war, have healed without any scarring? And what unspeakable acts took place on the alligator-ridden bayou plantation he left as an address? Wonderfully haunted, "The Alligator People" explores the mystery with skillful pacing, generally decent dialogue, and only intermittently laughable special effects. Miscegenation, anxiety over radiation and atomic science, homoeroticism, distrust of doctors and medicine, fear of the American South--all the major cultural obsessions of the late '50s are either tacitly or explicitly represented here; perhaps that's why the far-fetched scientific premise that underlies the plot makes a weird resonance despite its utter implausibility. The ubiquitous Lon Chaney is on hand, and his performance as a drunken swamp rat with a penchant for violence is a hoot; but the real star of the show is Beverly Garland, whose inspired lead, alternately detached and histrionic, decidedly puts to rest the myth of the inelasticity of early sci-fi and horror performers. A winner. "--Miles Bethany"

This Is The Story Of A Man Who Did! Summary: When "The Asphyx" was released in 1973, "The Exorcist" was about to change the landscape of horror forever, moving the genre away from subtlety and into the realm of graphic effects and makeup. That's one of the reasons why "The Asphyx" was a box-office flop, fondly remembered by a select few who never forgot this quirky little "thinking man's horror film" (as "Variety" called it), in which a 19th-century British philanthropist and amateur psychic researcher embarks on a fateful quest for immortality. Sir Hugo Cunningham (nicely played by Robert Stephens) has a morbid hobby of taking photographs of dying people, and this leads to his discovery of a nebulous spirit of the dead--known in mythology as the Asphyx--that appears (only visible on photographic plates) at the moment of death. Sir Hugo becomes obsessed with capturing his own Asphyx and thus ensuring that he cannot die, but of course this is an ill-fated ambition that puts Sir Hugo on a ruinous path to destruction and death.

Who strips in space? Who conveys love by hand? Who gives up the pill? Who takes sex to outer space? Who's the girl of the 21st century? Who nearly dies of pleasure? Summary: After an in-flight anti-gravity striptease (masked by the film's opening titles), Barbarella (Jane Fonda), a 41st century astronaut, lands on the planet Lythion and sets out to find the evil Durand Durand in the city of Sogo, where a new sin is invented every hour. There, she encounters such objects as the Exessive Machine, a genuine sex organ on which an accomplished artist of the keyboard, in this case, Durand Durand himself, can drive a victim to death by pleasure, a lesbian queen who, in her dream chamber, can make her fantasies take form, and a group of ladies smoking a giant hookah which, via a poor victim struggling in its glass globe, dispenses Essance of Man. You can't help but be impressed by the special effects crew and the various ways that were found to tear off what few clothes our heroine seemed to possess. Based on the popular French comic strip.

Batman Leslie H. MartinsonRated: PG Writer: Bob Kane, Lorenzo Semple Jr. Date Added: 04 Feb 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: from the famous character "BATMAN" Summary: Holy camp site, Batman! After a fabulously successful season on TV, the campy comic book adventure hit the big screen, complete with painful puns, outrageous supervillains, and fights punctuated with word balloons sporting such onomatopoeic syllables as "Pow!," "Thud!," and "Blammo!" Adam West's wooden Batman is the cowled vigilante alter ego of straight-arrow millionaire Bruce Wayne and Bruce Ward's Robin (a.k.a. Dick Grayson, Bruce's young collegiate protégé) his overeager sidekick in hot pants. Together they battle an unholy alliance of Gotham City's greatest criminals: the Joker (Cesar Romero, whooping up a storm), the Riddler (giggling Frank Gorshin), the Penguin (cackling Burgess Meredith), and the purr-fectly sexy Catwoman (Lee Meriwether slinking in a skin-tight black bodysuit). The criminals are, naturally, out to conquer the world, but with a little help from their unending supply of utility belt devices (bat shark repellent, anyone?), our dynamic duo thwarts their nefarious plans at every turn. Since the TV show ran under 30 minutes an episode (with commercials), the 105-minute film runs a little thin--a little camp goes a long way--but fans of the small-screen show will enjoy the spoofing tone throughout. Leslie H. Martinson directs Lorenzo Semple's screenplay like a big-budget TV episode minus the cliffhanger endings. "--Sean Axmaker"

Battle Beyond the Stars Jimmy T. MurakamiRated: PG Writer: Anne Dyer, John Sayles Date Added: 19 Oct 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Letterbox Comments: A battle beyond time, beyond space. Summary: Twenty-first-century science fiction fans accustomed to special-effects orgies like "The Matrix" may snigger at the quaint, "Flash Gordon"-like spaceships in "Battle Beyond the Stars". But executive producer Roger Corman's belated entry into the '70s sci-fi craze surpasses expectations with sharp performances and a witty script by John Sayles (his third for Corman, including 1978's "Piranha"). The story, lifted wholesale from Akira Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai" (1954), finds the dictator Sador (John Saxon) threatening the planet of Akira. Its pacifist inhabitants are no match for Sador's devastating weapon, the Stellar Converter, but young Shad (Richard Thomas) decides to fight back. Borrowing the ship of notorious mercenary Zed the Corsair, he recruits a band of mercenaries, each of whom has a personal reason to join the fight. Among them are a lizard-like humanoid (Morgan Woodward), an improbable space cowboy (George Peppard), a zaftig female warrior (Sybil Danning), and brooding killer-for-hire Gelt (Robert Vaughn, reprising his "Magnificent Seven" role). "Battle"'s final showdown is somewhat anticlimatic, but the surprisingly stellar cast (which includes Sam Jaffe and Darlanne Fluegel) and the indie spunk of Sayles' script, with its light meditations on death and honor, will charm newcomers and repeat audiences alike. New Concorde's digitally remastered DVD features commentary by Sayles and "Terminator 2" producer Gale Anne Hurd, "Battle"'s assistant production manager. Oh, and those spaceships? Designed by "Titanic" director James Cameron. Still laughing? "--Paul Gaita"

Battle Royale Kinji FukasakuRated: Writer: Koushun Takami, Kenta Fukasaku Date Added: 04 Feb 2007 Languages: Japanese Subtitles: English Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Could you kill your best friend? Summary: With the Japanese currently leading the way in thought-provoking cinematic violence, it's only fitting that Kinji Fukasaku's "Battle Royale" is being touted as a "Clockwork Orange" for the 21st century. Based on the novel by Koshun Takami, the film opens with a series of fleeting images of unruly Japanese schoolchildren, whose bad behavior provides a justification for the "punishments" that will ensue. Once the prequel has been dispensed with, the classmates are drugged and awaken on an island where they find they have been fitted with dog collars that monitor their every move. Instructed by their old teacher ("Beat" Takeshi) with the aid of an upbeat MTV-style video, they are told of their fate: after an impartial lottery they have been chosen to fight each other in a three-day, no-rules contest, the "Battle Royale." Their only chance of survival is through the death of all their classmates.

Battle Royale II Kinji FukasakuRated: Writer: Kenta Fukasaku, Norio Kida Date Added: 04 Feb 2007 Languages: Japanese Subtitles: English Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: This time it's war. Summary: Few Japanese films in recent memory have caused such controversy and commotion as Battle Royale. Directed by the late great Kinji Fukasaku, the brilliant heart-stopping thriller portrayed a junior high school class lucky enough to be chosen and taken to an island where the 42 students are forced to kill one another until the last boy or girl is left standing. Based on the novel by Koshun Takami, Fukasaku worked on the script with his son Kenta. Now comes the much anticipated sequel, Battle Royale II, based on an original story by the Fukasakus. Like James Cameron's 'Aliens,' its tagline reads "This time it's war" ...And it is! It's been a few years since Shuya and Noriko survived their BR bloodbath. They're now known as the head of a terrorist group known as the Wild Seven who blew up a series of skyscrapers. This time, the government decides to send the latest bunch of BR candidates to eliminate them. The group includes Shiori Kitano, the daughter of Kitano (Takeshi 'Beat' Kitano), the teacher and the director of the BR program who was killed by Shuya and Noriko. The group has only three days to finish the job, and again, they must wear dog collars that explode. This time round however, the same numbered students are connected through the collars, and if one dies, the other's dog collar explodes. With even bigger actions than the first movie, BRII racks up a body count that would make Freddy and Jason envious.

The Beast with a Million Eyes Roger CormanRated: Unrated Writer: Tom Filer Date Added: 16 Oct 2007 Comments: An unspeakable horror... Destroying... Terrifying! Summary: Thanks again to MGM and Fox for resurrecting this DVD line. Here we have a couple of extremely low budget American International Pictures films (back when they were still known as American Releasing Corporation - in fact, I think these were the first two sci-fi/horror films put out by the legendary studio) that go perfectly together. Is either film great, even good? Not by a long shot in conventional terms, but these should be judged on a different standard than your average A movie. The point is, they're both a lot of fun in that way only drive-in movies from the era could be, and these two are an inspired pairing, rightly aimed directly at those of us who either saw the movies at drive-ins back in the 50s, who (more likely) saw them Saturday creature features matinees on TV, or who have recently discovered the wonders of cheap 1950s horror and science fiction and are rabid for the opportunity to finally see them. Fox and MGM, great work and please keep these Midnight Movies coming until you've exhausted your libraries. Two that you might consider (both available elsewhere on DVD, but they need the quality treatment): Dementia 13 and The Terror.

The Blood of Heroes David Webb PeoplesRated: R Writer: David Webb Peoples Date Added: 01 Sep 2007 Sound: AAC Picture Format: Pan & Scan Comments: The time will come when winning is everything Summary: This is one of those little pictures you never expected to like, and yet 17 years after first seeing it, it is still a favorite of mine. A low budget affair, it really gets a lot for it's money. The story is fairly simple, a team of juggers go from town to town playing other teams to then possibly challenge one of the great league teams that play in one of the nine cities that remain in this post apocolyptic world. The game is straight forward. You must get your runner with a dog skull through the enemy lines to place it on a stake. It is very brutal however, with lots of action and blood. The stories two main characters are a disgraced former league player who leads his team to challenge again. Also, the girl runner or quick who wants more from her life that her squalid village can offer. This is a great underdog movie, and you will find yourself caught up in the action. The problem with the movie however is the dvd. It is presented only in full screen. It shows only one version of the movie. There is a slightly longer cut with a differant ending out there. Also the picture quality is very muddy. In the daylight scenes it will get by, but when they go underground, it is very hard to see anything. This is one film that needs a special edition. Sadly, though it is a cult classic, I don't know if it gets enough buys to warrant the studio to take the time and money to clean the print, and add some decent extras.

A Boy & His Dog L.Q. JonesRated: R Writer: Harlan Ellison, L.Q. Jones Date Added: 07 Feb 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: A rather kinky tale of survival Summary: Closely adapted from the acclaimed novella by Harlan Ellison, this postapocalyptic black comedy has emerged as a cult favorite since its release in 1975, when Don Johnson was a relative unknown and still years away from TV stardom on "Miami Vice." Here Johnson plays a young, libidinous loner named Vic who roams the postnuclear wasteland with his loyal dog, Blood, a remarkable hound with keen intelligence and the ability to telepathically communicate with his less-intelligent master. It's survival of the fittest, so food and sex are Vic's highest priorities, and he gets plenty of both when recruited into a mysterious underground society in desperate need of young fertile males. While Blood must fend for himself on the unfriendly surface, Vic realizes that he's an exploited prisoner and must escape to return to the canine friend he left behind. Thanks in large part to the sly wit of Blood (whose sarcastic voice is splendidly provided by Tim McIntire), this clever and disturbing film readily earns its lasting reputation as a low-budget classic, and features a funny yet chilling supporting role for Jason Robards Jr. "--Jeff Shannon"

Brazil Terry GilliamRated: R Writer: Terry Gilliam, Tom Stoppard Date Added: 08 Feb 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Letterbox Comments: It's only a state of mind. Summary: If Franz Kafka had been an animator and film director--oh, and a member of Monty Python's Flying Circus--this is the sort of outrageously dystopian satire one could easily imagine him making. However, "Brazil" was made by Terry Gilliam, who is all of the above except, of course, Franz Kafka. Be that as it may, Gilliam sure captures the paranoid-subversive spirit of Kafka's "The Trial" (along with his own Python animation) in this bureaucratic nightmare-comedy about a meek governmental clerk named Sam Lowry (Jonathan Pryce) whose life is destroyed by a simple bug. Not a software bug, a real bug (no doubt related to Kafka's famous "Metamorphosis" insect) that gets smooshed in a printer and causes a typographical error unjustly branding poor Sam as a miscreant.

A Clockwork Orange Stanley KubrickRated: R Writer: Anthony Burgess, Stanley Kubrick Date Added: 18 Oct 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Being the adventures of a young man ... who couldn't resist pretty girls ... or a bit of the old ultra-violence ... went to jail, was re-conditioned ... and came out a different young man ... or was he ? Summary: Stanley Kubrick's striking visual interpretation of Anthony Burgess's famous novel is a masterpiece. Malcolm McDowell delivers a clever, tongue-in-cheek performance as Alex, the leader of a quartet of droogs, a vicious group of young hoodlums who spend their nights stealing cars, fighting rival gangs, breaking into people's homes, and raping women. While other directors would simply exploit the violent elements of such a film without subtext, Kubrick maintains Burgess's dark, satirical social commentary. We watch Alex transform from a free-roaming miscreant into a convict used in a government experiment that attempts to reform criminals through an unorthodox new medical treatment. The catch, of course, is that this therapy may be nothing better than a quick cure-all for a society plagued by rampant crime. "A Clockwork Orange" works on many levels--visual, social, political, and sexual--and is one of the few films that hold up under repeated viewings. Kubrick not only presents colorfully arresting images, he also stylizes the film by utilizing classical music (and Wendy Carlos's electronic classical work) to underscore the violent scenes, which even today are disturbing in their display of sheer nihilism. Ironically, many fans of the film have missed that point, sadly being entertained by its brutality rather than being repulsed by it. "--Bryan Reesman"

The virus gets into the town's water supply and has two effects on the infected: death or irreversible insanity. The military moves in to contain the situation, but the local populace regards the army as a menacing force and things rapidly spin out of control. Soon the highly contagious virus infects the whole town and the soldiers as well, while a government scientist races to find an antidote. "The Crazies" features some great set pieces as the virus spreads: a little old lady smiles sweetly and stabs a soldier to death with a knitting needle; a young woman placidly sweeps with a broom while soldiers and locals have a bloody firefight around her; a soldier swings his rifle wildly at his comrades until they shoot him.

Cube Vincenzo NataliRated: R Writer: André Bijelic, Vincenzo Natali Date Added: 13 Feb 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Letterbox Comments: Fear... Paranoia... Suspicion... Desperation Summary: If Clive Barker had written an episode of "The Twilight Zone", it might have looked something like "Cube". A handful of strangers wake up inside a bizarre maze, having been spirited there during the night. They quickly learn that they have to navigate their way through a series of chambers if they have any hope of escape, but the problem is that there are lethal traps awaiting if they choose their route unwisely. Having established some imaginative and grisly punishments in store for the hostages, cowriter and director Vincenzo Natali turns his attention to the characters, for whom being trapped amplifies their best and worst qualities. The film is, in fact, similar to a famous episode of Rod Serling's old television series, though Natali's explanation for why these poor people are being put through hell is a lot closer to the spirit of "The X-Files". "Cube" has some solid moments of suspense and drama, and the sets are appropriately striking: one is tempted to believe at first the characters are lost inside a computer chip. "--Tom Keogh"

Dark City Alex ProyasRated: R Writer: Alex Proyas, Lem Dobbs, David S. Goyer Date Added: 18 Oct 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: They built the city to see what makes us tick. Last night one of us went off. Summary: If you're a fan of brooding comic-book antiheroes, got a nihilistic jolt from "The Crow" (1994), and share director Alex Proyas's highly developed preoccupation for style over substance, you might be tempted to call "Dark City" an instant classic of visual imagination. It's one of those films that exists in a world purely of its own making, setting its own rules and playing by them fairly, so that even its derivative elements (and there are quite a few) acquire their own specific uniqueness. Before long, however, the film becomes interesting only as a triumph of production design. And while that's certainly enough to grab your attention ("Blade Runner" is considered a classic, after all), it's painfully clear that "Dark City" has precious little heart and soul. One-dimensional characters are no match for the film's abundance of retro-futuristic style, so it's best to admire the latter on its own splendidly cinematic terms. Trivia buffs will be interested to know that the film's 50-plus sets (partially inspired by German expressionism) were built at the Fox Film Studios in Sydney, Australia, home base of director Alex Proyas and producer Andrew Mason. The underground world depicted in the film required the largest indoor set ever built in Australia. Befitting a film of such ambition, the DVD includes a feast of bonus features, including audio commentaries by the director, producer, writers, and cinematographer, and also by film critic Roger Ebert, who named "Dark City" one of the best films of 1998. Also included is an isolated music track, an interactive game, and a photo gallery of production stills and set design sketches. "--Jeff Shannon"

Dark Star John CarpenterRated: G Writer: John Carpenter, Dan O'Bannon Date Added: 21 Oct 2007 Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 Picture Format: Letterbox Comments: What would you be like after 20 years aboard DARK STAR the spaced-out spaceship. The ultimate cosmic comedy! Summary: The "Dark Star"'s crew is on a 20-year mission to destroy unstable planets and make way for future colonization. The smart bombs they use to effect this zoom off cheerfully to do their duty. But unlike "Star Trek", in which order prevails, the nerves of this crew are becoming increasingly frayed to the point of psychosis. Their captain has been killed by a radiation leak that also destroyed their toilet paper. "Don't give me any of that 'Intelligent Life' stuff," says Commander Doolittle when presented with the possibility of alien life. "Find me something I can blow up." When an asteroid storm causes a malfunction, Bomb Number 20 (the most cheerful character in the film) has to be repeatedly talked out of exploding prematurely, each time becoming more and more peevish, until they have to teach him phenomenology to make him doubt his existence. And the film's apocalyptic ending, lifted almost wholly from Ray Bradbury's story "Kaleidoscope," has the remaining crew drifting away from each other in space, each to a suitably absurd end. Absurd, surreal, and very funny. John Carpenter once described "Dark Star" as ""Waiting for Godot" in space." Made at a cost of practically nothing, the film's effects are nevertheless impressive and, along with the number of ideas crammed into its 83 minutes, ought to shame makers of science fiction films costing hundreds of times more. The DVD contains both the original 68-minute release and the director's full version. "--Jim Gay"

Day of the Triffids Freddie FrancisRated: Unrated Writer: John Wyndham, Bernard Gordon, Philip Yordan Date Added: 30 Jul 2007 Comments: Spine Chilling Terror Summary: This 1962 version of "The Day of the Triffids" has been a TV staple for many years, more probably because of a lasting affection for John Wyndham's original novel than any high regard for the film itself. The premise--a meteor shower blinds almost all of humanity, just as a space-borne strain of ambulatory killer plants begins to proliferate--is so strong that it's easy to overlook the frankly messy realization of it. The film opens well, sticking close to the book, as Howard Keel awakens in a London hospital after an eye operation and takes off the bandages to discover that he can see but most of the rest of the population can't. There are unsettling, effective bits with a plane literally flying blind and the beginnings of panic among the fumbling survivors, and one good Triffid encounter in a fog.

The Day the Earth Stood Still Robert WiseRated: G Writer: Harry Bates, Edmund H. North Date Added: 25 Feb 2007 Sound: Dolby Comments: A robot and a man . . . hold the world spellbound with new and startling powers from another planet! Summary: A hallmark of the science fiction genre as well as a wry commentary on the political climate of the 1950s, "The Day the Earth Stood Still" is a sci-fi movie less concerned with special effects than with a social parable. A spacecraft lands in Washington, D.C., carrying a humanoid messenger from another world (Michael Rennie) imparting a warning to the people of Earth to cease their violent behavior. But panic ensues as the messenger lands and is shot by a nervous soldier. His large robot companion destroys the Capitol as the messenger escapes the confines of the hospital. He moves in with a family as a boarder and blends into society to observe the full range of the human experience. Director Robert Wise ("West Side Story") not only provides one of the most recognizable icons of the science fiction world in his depiction of the massive robot loyal to his master, but he avoids the obvious camp elements of the story to create a quiet and observant story highlighting both the good and the bad in human nature. The Dead Zone David CronenbergRated: R Writer: Stephen King, Jeffrey Boam Date Added: 19 Oct 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: In his mind, he has the power to see the future. In his hands, he has the power to change it. Summary: "The Dead Zone" is based on a novel by Stephen King, directed by David Cronenberg ("Scanners", "The Fly") and produced by Debra Hill ("Halloween", "The Fog"). Such a trio of horror vets would be expected to come up with an evening of shocks and gore, but "The Dead Zone" is a surprise. While it has great atmospheric eeriness and undeniably scary moments, "The Dead Zone" is at heart a sensitive and thoughtful portrayal of main character Johnny Smith's dilemma. Christopher Walken, king of the vaguely creepy, plays Smith, a man who awakens from a five-year coma with the very mixed blessing of second sight. At the mere touch of a hand, Smith is unwillingly launched into scenes of past and future terror. (Director Cronenberg is said to have fired blanks from a .357 Magnum just out of camera range to keep Walken's flinching spontaneous.) "The Dead Zone" wisely takes its time telling the story, and thus allows for some great performances. Walken gives a rich portrayal of the conflicted Smith, and Colleen Dewhurst and Tom Skerritt both do welcome turns in smaller roles. The most fun of all, though, is clearly being had by Martin Sheen, who gives a spirited performance as a complete sleazebag. "--Ali Davis"

Dead-End Drive In Brian Trenchard-SmithRated: R Writer: Peter Carey, Peter Smalley Date Added: 03 Aug 2007 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: There's a party every day, a movie every night, and all the junk food you can eat. What more can a kid want... except to get out. Summary: In the near future (that is, 1994) the world is brought to the brink of anarchy by, for some reason, inflation. This has apparently caused millions of rusted car frames to be scattered around Australia, and forced everyone to dress like hepped up punk rockers and fight with tire irons. Thusly, the government tricks the unemployed people into drive ins and locks them up. This clever ruse works despite the fact that no one in Australia ever returns from the movies. If you like movies which are both painfully bad and jaw-droppingly amazing, this is the film for you. What doesn't it have? There is pointless nudity, vast continuity problems, tire fires, dozens of Mad Max meets the Sex Pistols montages, a fight with cricket bats,a timeless lesson about racism/relationships/junk food, a fight with car parts, amazing hairstyles, a monkey smoking pot, vigilante tow truck squads, and plot holes you could drive one of their combat ready tonka's through. This is an excellent cultural artifact shedding light on the eighties, sub-cultures, and Australian psychoses. Don't expect it to be good, but prepare for it to be amazing.

Death Race 2000 Paul BartelRated: R Writer: Ib Melchior, Robert Thom, Charles B. Griffith Date Added: 26 Feb 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: In The Year 2000 Hit And Run Driving Is No Longer A Felony. It's The National Sport! Summary: No doubt about it, "Death Race 2000" is one of the greatest B-movies ever made. A crown jewel in the career of B-movie king Roger Corman, it's a sublime example of exploitative filmmaking from a time when Corman's low-budget quickies were about to be swept aside by the blockbuster success of "Jaws" and "Star Wars", and all of its outrageous ingredients combined to create a schlock-movie masterpiece. Liberally infused with director Paul Bartel's macabre sense of humor, Corman's mandatory formula for success (R-rated violence and nudity, served up at least once every 15 minutes) is zanily applied to a near-future scenario (similar to "Rollerball", also released in 1975) in which a fascist empire appeases its oppressed citizens with "Death Race 2000," an automotive spectacle in which five costumed racers drive wacky race cars cross-country from New York to "New Los Angeles," scoring points with hit-and-run killings awarded on a sliding scale, with highest points for hitting children and the elderly! In addition to "Calamity Jane" (played by former Andy Warhol acolyte Mary Woronov), "Matilda the Hun" (Roberta Collins), and "Nero the Hero" (Martin Kove), the hottest contestants are "Machine Gun" Joe Viturbo (Sylvester Stallone, on the verge of "Rocky" stardom) and the reigning champion "Frankenstein" (David Carradine), whose "Death Race" prowess has reached near-mythic proportions.

Now only the deadliest man alive can save him. Summary: In the future, crime is out of control and New York City is a maximum security prison. Grabbing a bargaining chip right out of the air, convicts bring down the President's plane in bad old Gotham. Gruff Snake Plissken, a one-eyed warrior new to prison life, is coerced into bringing the President, and his cargo, out of this land of undesirables. Kurt Russell put his Disney days behind him as the nicest bad guy in the picture. All comic-book sensibilities and macho posturing, this is one of writer-director John Carpenter's better brainless escapes. There are snappy one-liners and explosive action scenes. However, the film lacks tension and some believability even within the realm of SF fantasy. Even when it fails to gel, though, it always manages to amuse, thanks in great part to a varied and unusual supporting cast (watch for Ernest Borgnine as a cabdriver). Followed in 1996 by Carpenter's overdone and campy "Escape from L.A." "--Rochelle O'Gorman"

Fahrenheit 451 François TruffautRated: Unrated Writer: Ray Bradbury, Jean-Louis Richard, David Rudkin, Helen Scott, François Truffaut Date Added: 07 Mar 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Aflame with the excitement and emotions of tomorrow! Summary: The classic science fiction novel by Ray Bradbury was a curious choice for one of the leading directors of the French New Wave, François Truffaut. But from the opening credits onward (spoken, not written on screen), Truffaut takes Bradbury's fascinating premise and makes it his own. The futuristic society depicted in "Fahrenheit 451" is a culture without books. Firemen still race around in red trucks and wear helmets, but their job is to start fires: they ferret out forbidden stashes of books, douse them with gasoline, and make public bonfires. Oskar Werner, the star of Truffaut's "Jules and Jim", plays a fireman named Montag, whose exposure to "David Copperfield" wakens an instinct toward reading and individual thought. (That's why books are banned--they give people too many ideas.) In an intriguing casting flourish, Julie Christie plays two roles: Montag's bored, drugged-up wife and the woman who helps kindle the spark of rebellion. The great Bernard Herrmann wrote the hard-driving music; Nicolas Roeg provided the cinematography. "Fahrenheit 451" received a cool critical reception and has never quite been accepted by Truffaut fans or sci-fi buffs. Its deliberately listless manner has always been a problem, although that is part of its point; the lack of reading has made people dry and empty. If the movie is a bit stiff (Truffaut did not speak English well and never tried another project in English), it nevertheless is full of intriguing touches, and the ending is lyrical and haunting. "--Robert Horton"

Fantastic Four - Rise of the Silver Surfer Tim StoryRated: PG Writer: Flint Dille, John Zuur Platten Date Added: 22 Oct 2007 Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" is another entertaining romp for the Marvel-superhero franchise. Reed Richards, Mr. Fantastic (Ioan Gruffudd), is treading on thin ice when his fiancée, Sue Storm, the Invisible Woman (Jessica Alba), thinks he's more interested in a series of cosmic phenomena occurring around the earth than in the preparations for their upcoming wedding. Sorry, ladies, but Reed is right. The disturbances are caused by a surge of cosmic power from a mysterious being called the Silver Surfer (an all-CGI creation, modeled by Doug Jones and voiced by Laurence Fishburne), who not only zooms around the skies on his board, but also has enough power to fight the FF, sometimes by turning their own power against them, not only mixing up Sue and Reed, but also Johnny Storm, the Human Torch (Chris Evans), and Ben Grimm, the Thing (Michael Chiklis). But that's not the worst of it. The Surfer is only an opening act, a herald looking for planets that his master, Galactus, can consume for his sustenance.

Fantastic Voyage Richard FleischerRated: PG Writer: Jerome Bixby, David Duncan, Harry Kleiner, Otto Klement Date Added: 17 Oct 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: The screen's most fantastic voyage Summary: "2001: A Space Odyssey" took the world on a mind-bending trip to outer space, but "Fantastic Voyage" is the original psychedelic inner-space adventure. When a brilliant scientist falls into a coma with an inoperable blood clot in the brain, a surgical team embarks on a top-secret journey to the center of the mind in a high-tech military submarine shrunk to microbial dimensions. Stephen Boyd stars as a colorless commander sent to keep an eye on things (though his eyes stay mostly on shapely medical assistant Raquel Welch), while Donald Pleasance is suitably twitchy as the claustrophobic medical consultant. The science is shaky at best, but the imaginative spectacle is marvelous: scuba-diving surgeons battle white blood cells, tap the lungs to replenish the oxygen supply, and shoot the aorta like daredevil surfers. The film took home a well-deserved Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Director Richard Fleischer, who turned Disney's 1954 "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" into one of the most riveting submarine adventures of all time, creates a picture so taut with cold-war tensions and cloak-and-dagger secrecy that niggling scientific contradictions (such as, how do miniaturized humans breathe full-sized air molecules?) seem moot. --"Sean Axmaker"

Gattaca Andrew NiccolRated: PG-13 Writer: Andrew Niccol Date Added: 11 Mar 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Pan & Scan Comments: There Is No Gene For The Human Spirit. Summary: Confidently conceived and brilliantly executed, "Gattaca" had a somewhat low profile release in 1997, but audiences and critics hailed the film's originality. It's since been recognized as one of the most intelligent science fiction films of the 1990s. Writer-director Andrew Niccol, the talented New Zealander who also wrote the acclaimed Jim Carrey vehicle "The Truman Show", depicts a near-future society in which one's personal and professional destiny is determined by one's genes. In this society, "Valids" (genetically engineered) qualify for positions at prestigious corporations, such as Gattaca, which grooms its most qualified employees for space exploration. "In-Valids" (naturally born), such as the film's protagonist, Vincent (Ethan Hawke), are deemed genetically flawed and subsequently fated to low-level occupations in a genetically caste society. With the help of a disabled "Valid" (Jude Law), Vincent subverts his society's social and biological barriers to pursue his dream of space travel; any random mistake--and an ongoing murder investigation at Gattaca--could reveal his plot. Part thriller, part futuristic drama and cautionary tale, "Gattaca" establishes its social structure so convincingly that the entire scenario is chillingly believable. With Uma Thurman as the woman who loves Vincent and identifies with his struggle, "Gattaca" is both stylish and smart, while Jude Law's performance lends the film a note of tragic and heartfelt humanity. "--Jeff Shannon"

Summary: There's a power-mad space slug slithering among (and through) the innocent citizens of L.A., and it's up to a hardboiled cop and a detective from way up north to stop it in this wonderfully straight-faced sci-fi action flick. The basic plot may be nothing new, but this remains one of the most underrated testosterone fests of the '80s, with a plethora of amazing stunts (there are more expensive cars smashed here than in the entire oeuvre of Hal Needham), characterizations far beyond the call of duty by Michael Nouri and the otherworldly Kyle MacLachlan, and a startlingly creepy denouement. "Babylon 5"'s Claudia Christian has a memorable role as a stripper with a high-caliber fetish. Essential viewing for audiences in the mood for something slimy. "--Andrew Wright"

Fortunately, derivative plotting doesn't detract from director Gary Fleder's capable handling of briskly paced action involving Spencer Olham (Gary Sinise), a weapons designer suspected of being an alien robot with an assassin's agenda. The year is 2079; Earth is at war with an alien race called the Centauri, and its dome-sealed cities are intensely monitored by the Earth Security Agency. A high-tech chase ensues between Olham and his ESA pursuer (Vincent D'Onofrio), testing the bond of trust between Olham and his physician wife (Madeleine Stowe). This marital subplot gives the film's twist ending additional impact, and Dick's recurring themes of lost identity and drug-altered reality are handled with adequate sophistication, while cool gadgetry and sharp visual effects compensate for the plot holes. While catching some rays on his brother's yacht, Williams is enveloped by a mysterious dark cloud. Soon after, he discovers that he's getting thinner-and smaller. Despite the assuring attitude of his family doctor (the inevitable William Schallert), Williams is losing an inch's worth of height with each passing day. It is finally determined that he has developed an "anti-cancer," a byproduct of a new strain of insecticide. By the time he's reached the size of a small boy, Williams has become world-famous. But the phenomenon has adversely affected his personality, turning him into a tyrant, lashing out at the world in general and his faithful wife in particular. An anti-toxin briefly halts the shrinking process, whereupon Williams joins a midget troupe, where he is briefly "accepted" for what he has become. But before long he's shrinking again, becoming so tiny that he is forced to live in a dollhouse. When Williams is attacked and by his pet cat, his wife assumes that he's been killed: in fact, Williams, by now so minuscule that even a garden-variety spider poses a deadly threat to him, is hiding in his cellar. By film's end, Williams is no larger than an atom. SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu,

The young doom-monger finds some serious help in a lady doctor and a brilliant astronomer. Soon they meet the aliens: green creatures with insect-like eyes. Invasion of the Body Snatchers Don SiegelRated: Unrated Writer: Jack Finney, Daniel Mainwaring, Richard Collins Date Added: 21 Mar 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Letterbox Comments: From Xvid Summary: Something's wrong in the town of Santa Mira, California. At first, Dr. Miles Bennell (Kevin McCarthy) is unconcerned when the townsfolk accuse their loved ones of acting like emotionless imposters. But soon the evidence is overwhelming--Santa Mira has been invaded by alien "pods" that are capable of replicating humans and taking possession of their identities. It's up to McCarthy to spread the word of warning, battling the alien invasion at the risk of his own life. Considered one of the best science fiction films of the 1950s and '60s, this classic paranoid thriller was widely interpreted as a criticism of the McCarthy era (that's Senator Joseph, not actor Kevin), which was characterized by anticommunist witch-hunts and fear of the dreaded blacklist. Some hailed it as an attack on the oppressive power of government as Big Brother. However viewers interpret it, this original 1956 version of "Invaders of the Body Snatchers" (based on Jack Finney's serialized novel "The Body Snatchers") remains a milestone movie in its genre, directed by Don Siegel with an inventive intensity that continues to pack an entertaining wallop. Look closely and you'll find future director Sam Peckinpah (an uncredited cowriter of this film) making a cameo appearance as a meter reader! The DVD release includes an interview with Kevin McCarthy, and for the first time on home video the film is presented in its original 2.35:1 widescreen aspect ratio. "--Jeff Shannon"
