| 142 | A Bloody Spear At Mount Fuji | Tomu Uchida | Kintaro Inoue, Shintarô Mimura, Fuji Yahiro | Unrated | 1955 | Chambara | |
A Bloody Spear At Mount Fuji Tomu UchidaRated: Unrated Writer: Kintaro Inoue, Shintarô Mimura, Fuji Yahiro Date Added: 07 Feb 2008 Languages: Japanese Subtitles: English Summary: Uchida's comeback film is a key work of postwar Japanese cinema, and, like all of Uchida's work, is unavailable in North America. (As Craig Watts notes at the end of his important essay on the film, "Either a trip to Japan or saintly patience is in order" to see it; now we can at least reward the latter.) As decisively as Kurosawa before him, Uchida broke the conventions of the chambara (sword fight film) with his witty, loose-limbed A BLOODY SPEAR AT MT. FUJI, about a samurai delivering a tea cup to Edo. SPEAR marks Uchida's postwar return to Japanese cinema and to progressive principles, but its homecoming is strikingly ambivalent in its values. As Craig Watts has written, "Both progressive and nostalgic, humanistic and nationalistic, peaceful and violent, BLOOD SPEAR, MT. FUJI, like the Japanese experience in Manchuria, is an aggressive conglomeration of extremes." From its shambling "on the road" opening, scored with jaunty jazz and enlivened by a flagrantly artificial setting and proliferation of incident, to its SHANE-like ending, the film takes in a remarkable range of characters and classes, of tones and traditions. Full of subplots and spin-offs, scatology, sentimentality, and social satire, this simple tale becomes a sprawling epic whose culmination - a fight to the death amongst gushing sake barrels - shocked the Japanese audiences of its time with its sheer vehemence. This was Uchida's first work with the great period star, Chiezo Kataoka, who appeared here with his son and daughter, Motoharu Ueki and Chie. "A fine period drama with lyricism, humour, and violent emotion" (Tadao Sato).

Lady Snowblood Toshiya FujitaRated: Unrated Writer: Kazuo Uemura, Kazuo Koike Date Added: 17 Oct 2007 Languages: Japanese Subtitles: English Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: A flamboyantly blood-spattered samurai revenge picture with a twist: the implacable seeker of retribution is a slender female (Meiko Kaji) with a flawless ivory complexion and a dead-center killer stare. Born in prison, Snowblood is raised by a martial priest and trained to fulfill a single purpose: tracking down, and dismembering (or bisecting), the four cackling fiends who killed her father and persecuted her mother to an early grave. Adapted from another "manga" comic book written by Kasuo Koike, whose most famous work became the legendary "Lone Wolf and Cub" film series, this 1973 programmer stays close to its pulp-paper roots: images from the comics are deployed in a couple of montage sequences, and the story is divided into four chapters drawn from the monthly "manga" installments. Stalwart leading man Toshio Kurasawa plays a crusading journalist who writes a series of Japanese dime novels based on Snowblood's exploits, and manages to flush out a couple of the evildoers in the process. Lone Wolf and Cub 1: Sword of Vengeance Kenji MisumiRated: Unrated Writer: Kazuo Koike, Goseki Kojima Date Added: 04 Apr 2007 Languages: Japanese Subtitles: English Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: "Child and expertise for rent," reads the banner flying from the wooden cart of rogue samurai Itto Ogami (Tomisaburo Wakayama). With his infant son and a baby carriage stocked with a veritable arsenal in tow, Ogami rents his services for 500 pieces of gold while awaiting his revenge on the corrupt clan that murdered his wife. Director Kenji Misumi draws his distinctive graphic style from the legendary manga series written by Kazuo Koike (who adapted his own work for the screen) and adds an inspired cinematic device: when Ogami enters battle, the world falls silent, literally, until his sword strikes. The fights are savage--blades slash, limbs fly, and blood spurts like geysers--yet the film relaxes in moments of serenity and tenderness as the cooing baby boy marvels at the wonder of the world. An essential of Japanese action cinema, it launched a classic six-film series. "--Sean Axmaker"

Lone Wolf and Cub 2: Baby Cart at the River Styx Kenji MisumiRated: Unrated Writer: Kazuo Koike, Goseki Kojima Date Added: 04 Apr 2007 Languages: Japanese Subtitles: English Summary: "Kozure Ôkami: Sanzu no kawa no ubaguruma" ("Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart at the River Styx") is the second of six films adapted from the epic manga by Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima. I have read through the first 27 volumes of the manga and while awaiting the publication of the final volume have been watching the film versions. What I am finding most interesting is how Koike, who did the screenplay, is adapting the original stories and weaving them together into a particular film. In the first film of series, "Kozure Ôkami: Kowokashi udekashi tsukamatsuru" ("Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance"), Koike basically took one early episode and incorporate as flashbacks the two pivotal stories of how Ogami Itto and Daigoro came to be walking the assassin's road. The approach is more ambitious for this second film.

The Twilight Samurai Yôji YamadaRated: Unrated Writer: Shuuhei Fujisawa, Yôji Yamada, Yoshitaka Asama Date Added: 22 Oct 2007 Languages: Japanese Subtitles: English Summary: Slow-paced and subtle in presentation, "The Twilight Samurai" captures a side of the famed samurai that is rarely seen. Set in a northeastern province (Shonai) of late nineteenth century Japan, the film tells the story of Seibei Iguchi (Hiroyuki Sanada)--a low-ranking, debt-ridden samurai who, after losing his wife to consumption, struggles to care for his two young daughters and senile mother. Emphasizing the conflicts between duty and family, and love and class rank, director Yoji Yamada has created a film that is deeply engaging on several levels: a classic tale of honor, love, and courage.

Yojimbo Akira KurosawaRated: Unrated Writer: Akira Kurosawa, Ryuzo Kikushima Date Added: 19 Oct 2007 Languages: Japanese Subtitles: English Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Letterbox Summary: This semi-comic 1961 film by legendary director Akira Kurosawa ("Rashomon", "Ran") was inspired by the American Western genre. Kurosawa mainstay Toshirô Mifune ("The Seven Samurai") plays a drifting samurai for hire who plays both ends against the middle with two warring factions, surviving on his wits and his ability to outrun his own bad luck. Eventually the samurai seeks to eliminate both sides for his own gain and to define his own sense of honor. "Yojimbo" is striking for its unorthodox treatment of violence and morality, reserving judgment on the actions of its main character and instead presenting an entertaining tale with humor and much visual excitement. One of the inspirations for the "spaghetti Westerns" of director Sergio Leone and later surfacing as a remake as "Last Man Standing" with Bruce Willis, this film offers insight into a director who influenced American films even as he was influenced by them. Zatoichi 1: The Tale of Zatoichi Kenji MisumiRated: Unrated Writer: Minoru Inuzuka, Kan Shimosawa Date Added: 27 Feb 2009 Languages: Japanese Subtitles: English Sound: AAC Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: Zatoichi, the wandering masseur and master swordsman, is a mercenary hero with a difference: he's blind, and no less deadly for it. In his debut, Ichi shuffles into a gangster-run town like a wry con man, fleecing the dim-bulb gambling thugs and sponging off a local mob boss who wants the deadly Ichi on his side in an impending gang war. Released the same year Akira Kurosawa unleashed "Yojimbo", stocky Shintaro Katsu's modest and soft-spoken Ichi couldn't be more different from the dynamic Toshiro Mifune's swaggering and arrogant Yojimbo. Director Kenji Misume can't match Kurosawa's searing cynicism or dynamic action, but when Ichi finally lets loose after avoiding conflict for the entire film, his spare, sudden attack makes a startling contrast to the usual flashing swords and furious movements. Zatoichi returned in 25 sequels and a long-running TV series, always played by Shintaro Katsu.

Zatôichi 26: Darkness is His Ally Shintarô KatsuRated: Unrated Writer: Tatsumi Ichiyama, Shintarô Katsu, Tsutomu Paul Nakamura, Kyôhei Nakaoka, Kan Shimosawa Date Added: 29 Nov 2007 Languages: Japanese Subtitles: English Sound: AAC Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Darkness is his ally [USA] Summary: As the 26th installment in a popular film series that lasted 27 years, "Zatoichi" is essentially a "greatest hits" compendium of all the films that preceded it. That makes it essential viewing for Zatoichi fans and anyone interested in the voluminous "source code" for Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill". Known in Japan as "Zatoichi 26" or "Zatoichi '89", this lavish production was the last to star Shintaro Katsu, who originated the title role of "the Blind Swordsman" in 1962's "The Tale of Zatoichi" and served triple-duty as writer and director of this stylishly violent latter-day adventure. Now much older and still a wandering loner, the blind, peace-loving masseur Ichi (or, in Japanese, "Zato Ichi") seeks a quiet life among the gentle people of Edo Period villages, but when he's caught in a power struggle between rival Yakuza clans, his reputation as a deadly defender of the innocent precedes him, and he's forced to fend for himself in a series of sword-wielding showdowns. Between geysers of spurting crimson, this gorgeous "Zatoichi" film delivers good humor and mild sentiment, although series devotees were justifiably disappointed when the familiar plot failed to advance Zatoichi's legend in a middle-aged context. Still, the action sequences are frequent and fun, and despite controversy surrounding an accidental death during the climactic battle (for which Katsu's son, playing a villain, was ultimately found not guilty), this was a fitting farewell to Katsu's involvement in the franchise, which was revived once again with the successful release of Takeshi "Beat" Kitano's "Zatoichi" in 2003. A Christmas Story Bob ClarkRated: PG Writer: Jean Shepherd Date Added: 13 Feb 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: A Tribute to the Original, Traditional, One-Hundred-Percent, Red-Blooded, Two-Fisted, All-American Christmas... Summary: "A Christmas Story" is on its way to becoming an annual holiday classic, one to keep on the shelf with "It's a Wonderful Life", the puppet-animated "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer", and "A Charlie Brown Christmas". It may have been directed by Bob Clark (responsible for the "Porky's" pictures), but it's based on the childhood memoirs of humorist Jean Shepherd (from his hilarious book "In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash"). And it is Shepherd's wry, deadly accurate and gently nostalgic comic sensibility that shines through in this kid's-eye-view of an all-American Christmas in the 1940s. All little Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) wants under the tree on Christmas morning is a Daisy Brand Red-Ryder BB rifle. He not only wants it, he's consumed with an aching desire for it. Unfortunately, his mother (Melinda Dillon) repeatedly crushes his dreams with the familiar, harsh mantra: "You'll put your eye out!" Among the movie's highlights are a surrealistic visit with little brother Randy to a department store Santa, and the childlike mixture of delight, pride, and awe with which Ralphie's dad (Darren McGavin) takes possession of a spectacularly gaudy prize he's won in a radio contest. McGavin should have won an award for his splendid comic work as a middle-aged-kid-turned-patriarch who alternates between grownup temper tantrums and unabashed juvenile joy. "--Jim Emerson"

Christmas with the Kranks Joe RothRated: PG Writer: John Grisham, Chris Columbus Date Added: 29 Jul 2007 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Their Christmas will turn the town upside down! Summary: Slapstick humor gets a full-body workout in "Christmas with the Kranks". Critics were unanimous in their derision, and John Grisham must have gnashed his teeth over what studio-boss-turned-director Joe Roth did to his bestselling novel "Skipping Christmas", to which this broad-stroked comedy bears little or no resemblance. The title characters are played by Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis, who decide to skip Christmas because their daughter's in Peru with the Peace Corps. Thus begins a rabid program of enforced conformity when their neighbors (led by Dan Aykroyd) coerce the Kranks into changing their holiday attitude--a change that comes easily when the daughter announces she'll be home for Christmas after all. Imagine if a suburban lynch mob said "Have a Merry Christmas or we'll kill you," and you'll get some idea of what spending "Christmas with the Kranks" is really like. And if you laughed at the frozen cat, you're probably on Santa's "naughty" list. "--Jeff Shannon"

While Finch methodically plans out every minute of the coming Christmas season for his family, Buddy craves freshness and excitement and is seized by an impulsive desire to decorate his house so brightly that it can be seen from space. While the men's wives Kelly (Kristin Davis) and Tia (Kristin Chenoweth) and their children revel in one another's differences and form solid friendships, a rivalry of personalities and Christmas spirit ensues between the two men that will wind up testing the patience and love of every member of both families. Elf Jon FavreauRated: PG Writer: David Berenbaum Date Added: 31 Jul 2007 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: This holiday, discover your inner elf. Summary: "Elf" is genuinely good. Not just "Saturday Night Live"-movie good, when the movie has some funny bits but is basically an insult to humanity; "Elf" is a smartly written, skillfully directed, and deftly acted story of a human being adopted by Christmas elves who returns to the human world to find his father. And because the writing, directing, and acting are all genuinely good, "Elf" is also genuinely funny. Will Ferrell, as Buddy the adopted elf, is hysterically sincere. James Caan, as his rediscovered father, executes his surly dumbfoundedness with perfect aplomb. Zooey Deschanel, as a department store worker with whom Buddy falls in love, is adorably sardonic. Director Jon Favreau ("Swingers") shepherds the movie through all the obligatory Christmas cliches and focuses on material that's sometimes subtle and consistently surprising. Frankly, "Elf" feels miraculous. Also featuring Mary Steenburgen, Bob Newhart, Peter Dinklage, and Ed Asner as Santa Claus. "--Bret Fetzer"

It's a Wonderful Life Frank CapraRated: Unrated Writer: Philip Van Doren Stern, Frances Goodrich, Albert Hackett, Frank Capra, Jo Swerling, Michael Wilson Date Added: 21 Mar 2007 Summary: Now perhaps the most beloved American film, "It's a Wonderful Life" was largely forgotten for years, due to a copyright quirk. Only in the late 1970s did it find its audience through repeated TV showings. Frank Capra's masterwork deserves its status as a feel-good communal event, but it is also one of the most fascinating films in the American cinema, a multilayered work of Dickensian density. George Bailey (played superbly by James Stewart) grows up in the small town of Bedford Falls, dreaming dreams of adventure and travel, but circumstances conspire to keep him enslaved to his home turf. Frustrated by his life, and haunted by an impending scandal, George prepares to commit suicide on Christmas Eve. A heavenly messenger (Henry Travers) arrives to show him a vision: what the world would have been like if George had never been born. The sequence is a vivid depiction of the American Dream gone bad, and probably the wildest thing Capra ever shot (the director's optimistic vision may have darkened during his experiences making military films in World War II). Capra's triumph is to acknowledge the difficulties and disappointments of life, while affirming--in the teary-eyed final reel--his cherished values of friendship and individual achievement. "It's a Wonderful Life" was not a big hit on its initial release, and it won no Oscars (Capra and Stewart were nominated); but it continues to weave a special magic. "--Robert Horton"

Strauss Date Added: 01 Aug 2007 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Santa Claus is coming to town, November 1 Summary: Considering how lame this sequel "could" have been, "The Santa Clause 2" makes for a pleasant holiday diversion. It's got the familiar smell of Disney marketeering, and more than a few parents will object to this further embellishment of the St. Nick legend, but Tim Allen's amiable presence provides ample compensation. As a divorced dad who inherited the jolly man's job in "The Santa Clause", Allen now faces another Yuletide challenge. According to the "Missus Clause" in his North Pole contract, he can't continue to be the real Santa until he gets married. As luck and five credited screenwriters would have it, Allen falls for the Scrooge-y principal (Elizabeth Mitchell) of his son's school, while a phony, power-hungry duplicate Santa wreaks havoc on the North Pole's overworked elves. It's all as sweet as spiced eggnog, with that warmed-over feel of a mandated sequel, but the Christmas spirit does prevail with the sound of sleigh bells and Allen's rosy-cheeked ho, ho, ho! Only this time, it's three against one. Summary: Most critics couldn't get behind Bill Murray's modern retelling of Charles Dickens's "A Christmas Carol", finding it too unfocused at times and not nearly wicked enough. Still, if you're a Murray fan, you have to enjoy his deliciously nasty portrayal of the world's meanest TV executive, who has his cathartic moment one cold Christmas night in New York City. The various ghosts lead him on a ghost-town tour of Manhattan, with stops at holidays past, present, and future and a Kumbaya moment when Al Green and Annie Lennox sing "Put a Little Love in Your Heart." The effects are otherworldly, but one wishes the writing were as sharp as Murray's edgy portrayal. "--Marshall Fine"

Accepted Steve PinkRated: PG-13 Writer: Adam Cooper, Bill Collage, Mark Perez Date Added: 15 Oct 2007 Sound: MP3 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Reject rejection Summary: Justin Long has been hovering on the edges of movies like "The Break-Up" and "Dodgeball", providing little comic bursts that are often funnier than the rest of the movie. In "Accepted", Long plays Bartleby Gaines, a fast-talking slacker who, when he gets rejected by every college he applied to, invents a phony college to get his parents off his back. Unfortunately, the website his best friend creates is too effective--hundreds of other rejects apply and are accepted. Instead of revealing the hoax, Gaines decides to forge ahead and let the students create their own curriculum, little suspecting that their school is obstructing the expansion plans of the nearby snobbish college. "Accepted" is much better than you might expect, given the low bar set by most campus comedies; it aims for, and sometimes achieves, the blend of slapstick and social satire that "Animal House" embodied. Long proves to be a charming leading man without losing his quirky comic sense and the supporting cast is consistently entertaining, particularly stand-up comedian Lewis Black, who delivers a variety of sardonic rants about society. "Accepted"'s critique of conformism is glib--you wish they'd given it a little more bite--but it's still valid and a pleasant sliver of substance in an otherwise vapid genre. "--Bret Fetzer"

American Dreamz Paul WeitzRated: PG-13 Writer: Paul Weitz Date Added: 29 Jul 2007 Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Imagine a country where the President never reads the newspaper, where the government goes to war for all the wrong reasons, and more people vote for a pop idol than their next President. Summary: Thinly disguised versions of "American Idol" and the Bush presidency collide in the satire "American Dreamz". Bored and self-loathing, Martin Tweed (Hugh Grant, "About a Boy") wants to give his hugely popular reality show "American Dreamz" an extra boost by courting political controversy--but suspects he may find personal redemption in the form of scheming contestant Sally Kendoo (Mandy Moore, "Saved!"), who manipulates her boyfriend (Chris Klein, "Election") to give herself a vote-winning backstory. Meanwhile, equally desperate to court popularity, the President's chief of staff (Willem Dafoe, "Spider-Man", looking suspiciously Dick-Cheney-esque) gets Tweed to let the President (Dennis Quaid, "The Rookie") be a guest judge on the show. But unbeknownst to all, a privately conflicted terrorist (Sam Golzari) has been selected as a contestant, and his sleeper cell wants him to blow up the President in the final competition. This complicated storyline doesn't quite have the bite it's reaching for; the political edge is particularly blunted--even diehard Republicans are unlikely to be offended. But sharp and funny lines are sprinkled throughout and the cast is uniformly excellent; the relationship between Grant and Moore is oddly touching, and Marcia Gay Harden ("Pollock") makes an amazing First Lady--is this satire, or what we all wish Laura Bush was really like? An uneven movie, but with some delicious tidbits. "--Bret Fetzer"

Analyze This Harold RamisRated: R Writer: Kenneth Lonergan, Peter Tolan, Harold Ramis Date Added: 27 Jun 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: New York's most powerful gangster is about to get in touch with his feelings. YOU try telling him his 50 minutes are up. Summary: Cast Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal together in a film and it should be a sucker's bet as to who's going to be funnier and who's going to give the more nuanced performance. Somehow, though, De Niro walks away with most of the laughs in "Analyze This", a buddy action-comedy about a mob boss (De Niro, natch) suffering from panic attacks who makes a nebbishy shrink (Crystal, natch) an offer he can't refuse--actually, it's not really an offer, it's a command. The good doctor is forced to help the gangster get in touch with his feelings. Had the brilliant TV series "The Sopranos" not underscored how thin and watery and shticky director-cowriter Harold Ramis's approach to such potentially rich material actually is, the movie--a hit in theaters and De Niro's biggest film ever--would seem more fresh and kicky. De Niro's definitely a hoot as the ever milder menace, and Crystal actually concentrates on giving a credible performance opposite the acting legend (alas, he doesn't turn his character's fear of his patient into inspired comedy, as Alan Arkin did in "Grosse Pointe Blank"). The conclusion devolves into the requisite gunplay, and Chazz Palminteri and Lisa Kudrow are criminally wasted as an opposing mob boss and Crystal's fiancée, respectively, but overall, it's breezy fun. "--David Kronke"

ATL Chris RobinsonRated: PG-13 Writer: Tina Gordon Chism, Antwone Fisher Date Added: 29 Jul 2007 Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: A New American Story Summary: If you've grown weary of gangsta thrillers and violent depictions of thug life, "ATL" will hit you like a breath of fresh air. Based on a story by Antwone Fisher (writer and subject of the 2003 film that bears his name) and written by Tina Gordon Chism, it's essentially a contemporary African-American riff on "American Graffiti", focusing on a group of teenagers on the cusp of adulthood, learning valuable life lessons as they strive to make a better future for themselves and their loved ones. The title refers to the airport designation for Atlanta, and that's where orphaned 17-year-old Rashad (Tip Harris, aka rapper T.I.) lives with his younger brother Anton (Evan Ross) and uncle George (Mykelti Williamson). They're poor like most Southside families, but they're making ends meet, caring for each other and forging life-long friendships with guys like the smart, ambitious Esquire (Jackie Long), transplanted New Yorker Brooklyn (Albert Daniels), and likable homeboy Teddy (Jason Weaver). On Sunday nights they hang at the Cascade roller rink, trying to impress the girls with their latest moves, and director Chris Robinson (veteran of many music videos) captures it all with casual momentum and genuine affection for his characters. A little "too" casual perhaps (the pacing sometimes lags), but with a lively mix of color and music, "ATL" manages to be positive and hopeful without sanitizing the harsher realities (including drugs and violence) of modern urban America. There are threats and obstacles to overcome, but "ATL" is all about potential, striving for goals and accepting responsibility for one's own actions. Between this and "Get Rich or Die Tryin'", which example would "you" prefer to follow? "--Jeff Shannon"

What truly horrible lives they must lead. Summary: Henry Chinaski never cared for the American dream, the thought of needing to become 'something' and fit into the system disgusts him. He believes that life is free and yours to live like you see fit, and if that in some cases involves copious amounts of whiskey then so be it. Henry spends his days drinking and listening to the radio, and he spends his nights drinking and fighting against Eddy who he thinks personifies shallowness and shameless self promoting. Sometimes in the middle of this he finds the time to jot down a few lines of poetry or a short story. After fighting Eddy and winning for a change Henry is thrown out of his regular bar where Eddy is a bartender. This leads him to seek another watering hole where he happens to find Wanda who is a barfly, in her own words "if another man came along with a fifth of whiskey, I'd go with him". Henry is not fazed by this thou and moves in with her. Of course Wanda immediately goes off and sleeps with Eddy, but after some clothes throwing and two visits from the paramedics Henry and Wanda manage to patch up their relationship. Then Henry gets a visit from a literary agent who has decided to publish one of his stories that he sent in because he "liked the name of the mag". He follows the agent home to her place in order to receive his payment and with the help of a little whiskey sleeps with her. When he leaves to go back to the bar and back to Wanda the agent is heartbroken, she sees something special in Henry and has fallen in love with him. She follows him to his usual bar and gets into a cat fight with Wanda that Wanda wins. In celebration of new found love, happiness and money Henry buys a round for everyone at the bar and toasts them "to my friends!"

Be Cool F. Gary GrayRated: PG-13 Writer: Elmore Leonard, Peter Steinfeld Date Added: 04 Feb 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Everyone is looking for the next big hit Summary: "Be Cool" takes its own advice: It's slick, Hollywood entertainment that kills two amusing hours with relative ease and comfort. Better than leftovers but not as tasty as a full-course meal, this sequel to 1995's hit comedy "Get Shorty" (and based on Elmore Leonard's 1999 sequel novel) finds former loan shark Chili Palmer (John Travolta) itching to get out of the movie business, so he hooks up with a newly widowed music executive (Uma Thurman) to launch the career of an up-'n-coming Beyoncé-like singer (newcomer Christina Milian). A mock-black manager (Vince Vaughn), his sleazy boss (Harvey Keitel), and an upscale gangsta-rap executive (Cedric the Entertainer) all have a competing stake in the fast-rising pop diva's future, and this sets the plot rolling in a fun but rather hand-me-down fashion that lacks the savvy panache of "Get Shorty" but still provides plenty of lightweight humor. The Rock and Outkast's André Benjamin provide the best laughs in supporting roles that effortlessly relieve the movie from the symptoms of sequelitis. "--Jeff Shannon"

The Benchwarmers Dennis DuganRated: PG-13 Writer: Allen Covert, Nick Swardson Date Added: 29 Jul 2007 Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Get off the bench and get into the game. Summary: Credit "The Benchwarmers" for achieving the impossible: It makes the 2005 remake of "The Bad News Bears" look like a masterpiece. They're essentially the same film, with the same lowbrow PG-13 humor (mostly involving bodily functions, broad slapstick, little people, nerds, geeks, and nose-picking), but this baseball comedy earns a few brownie points for its heart-warming message about including non-athletic kids (i.e. "benchwarmers") in Little League baseball, if only to boost their confidence and give them a moment of ball-field glory. It's a pleasant sentiment intended to encourage under-achievers to feel good about themselves, and that makes this loose-and-goofy vehicle for Rob Schneider, David Spade, and "Napoleon Dynamite"'s Jon Heder an easygoing time-killer. Parents with good taste should be warned that his movie has no taste at all (it's hopelessly mired in the swamp of fart jokes and juvenile sight-gags), and is there really a need for mild profanity in a movie like this? That said, there are a few laughs in the efforts of Schneider and his ultra-nerdy pals as they form a team of rejects and go to bat against an enemy squad of current and former school-bullies, led by former late-night talk-show host Craig Kilborn. In addition to Schneider and Spade, "Saturday Night Live" alumni Jon Lovitz and Tim Meadows show up for an easy paycheck, and director Dennis Dugan handles the dumb-and-dumber shtick as if he were on vacation, sipping margaritas and shamelessly going for the easy laughs. If that's what you're looking for, you've come to the right place."--Jeff Shannon"

The Big Lebowski Joel CoenRated: R Writer: Ethan Coen, Joel Coen Date Added: 04 Feb 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: They figured he was a lazy time wasting slacker. They were right. Summary: After the tight plotting and quirky intensity of "Fargo", this casually amusing follow-up from the prolifically inventive Coen (Ethan and Joel) brothers seems like a bit of a lark, and the result was a box-office disappointment. The good news is, "The Big Lebowski" is every bit a Coen movie, and its lazy plot is part of its laidback charm. After all, how many movies can claim as their hero a pot-bellied, pot-smoking loser named Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) who spends most of his time bowling and getting stoned? And where else could you find a hairnetted Latino bowler named Jesus (John Turturro) who sports dazzling purple footgear, or an erotic artist (Julianne Moore) whose creativity consists of covering her naked body in paint, flying through the air in a leather harness, and splatting herself against a giant canvas? Who else but the Coens would think of showing you a camera view from inside the holes of a bowling ball, or an elaborate Busby Berkely-styled musical dream sequence involving a Viking goddess and giant bowling pins? The plot--which finds Lebowski involved in a kidnapping scheme after he's mistaken for a rich guy with the same name--is almost beside the point. What counts here is a steady cascade of hilarious dialogue, great work from Coen regulars John Goodman and Steve Buscemi, and the kind of cinematic ingenuity that puts the Coens in a class all their own. Be sure to watch with snacks in hand, because "The Big Lebowski" might give you a giddy case of the munchies. "--Jeff Shannon"

The Big White Mark MylodRated: R Writer: Collin Friesen Date Added: 29 Jul 2007 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: When you need somebody, any body will do. Summary: In "The Big White", a failing Alaskan travel agent hopes he's found the answer to his problems when a couple of thugs leave a dead body in a dumpster outside his business. The lack of a body has prevented Paul Barnell (Robin Williams, "The Birdcage", "One Hour Photo") from claiming his missing brother's life insurance. Unfortunately, the thugs who dumped the body in the first place (Tim Blake Nelson, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?", and W. Earl Brown, "Deadwood") want it back, so they kidnap Barnell's wife (Holly Hunter, "Raising Arizona"), who may or may not have Tourette's Syndrome. Meanwhile, an obsessive insurance agent (Giovanni Ribisi, "Saving Private Ryan") smells something fishy and thinks he's found the case that will get him and his phone psychic girlfriend (Alison Lohman, "White Oleander") transferred to warmer climes, and Barnell's long-missing brother (Woody Harrelson, "White Men Can't Jump") returns, a bit perturbed to learn he's dead. "The Big White" suffers from an overload of quirkiness--phone psychics, Tourette's, and possibly gay hit men are a lot of whimsy for one movie--but the actors commit themselves to their roles with gusto. The movie misses the bullseye that "Fargo" hit, but fans of macabre comedy may enjoy "The Big White". "--Bret Fetzer"

| 286 | Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey | Peter Hewitt | Chris Matheson, Ed Solomon | PG | 1991 | MGM | Comedy |
Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey Peter HewittRated: PG Writer: Chris Matheson, Ed Solomon Date Added: 17 Oct 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Once... they made history. Now... they are history. Summary: It is the future. Society has at last solved all its major problems, thanks to amiable lunkheads Bill and Ted and the inspiring music of their band, Wyld Stallyns. Only one man is dissatisfied with the way things have turned out, the evil De Nomolos. In an effort to change the future, De Nomolos sends evil Bill and Ted robots back in time to prevent the real Bill and Ted from winning a pivotal Battle of the Bands. What follows is a spirited journey through the afterlife as Bill and Ted try to rescue their girlfriends, save the future, and, oh, yeah, learn how to play the guitar. "Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey" swings easily between childish and clever humor, and is good at both: a Bergman reference is quickly followed by an equally funny bit about Death's stinky feet. Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter seem happy to be reprising their roles and even manage to add funny spins on Evil Robot Bill and Ted. William Sadler very nearly steals the movie as Death, playing both his wounded dignity and budding desire to be funky to a T. As if that weren't enough, George Carlin returns as Rufus and Pam Grier does a cameo just for the hell of it. "Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey" is ample proof that not all sequels suck. Sometimes they're even better than the original. "--Ali Davis"

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure Stephen HerekRated: PG Writer: Chris Matheson, Ed Solomon Date Added: 17 Oct 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: History is about to be rewritten by two guys who can't spell... Summary: Like, radical, dude--but not nearly as funny as it should be, even though it was a box-office hit. Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter are a pair of dim Valley boys, whose life is made heinous by a school history project. Enter George Carlin as a futuristic dude with a time-traveling phone booth. So Bill and Ted go back in time to round up a gang of historical figures (Socrates, Joan of Arc) to bring back for their presentation. Abe Lincoln at the mall? That's about as witty as it gets, rendering this the kind of comedy that gives teenaged audiences a bad name. "--Marshall Fine"

Blues Brothers 2000 John LandisRated: PG-13 Writer: Dan Aykroyd, John Landis Date Added: 19 May 2007 Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: The Blues Are Back Summary: It's hard to ignore the sad and conspicuous absence of the late John Belushi, but this long-delayed sequel to 1980's "The Blues Brothers" still has Dan Aykroyd--as Chicago bad boy and blues rocker Elwood Blues--to keep the music alive. Once again, Elwood's trying to reunite the original Blues Brothers Band, and this time he's got a strip-joint bartender (John Goodman) and a 10-year-old orphan named Buster (J. Evan Bonifant) joining him at center stage. Believing that Elwood has kidnapped the kid, the cops are hot on his trail as the reunited band hits the road for the Battle of the Bands in Louisiana and the All-Star Blues Jam that ends the movie in a rockin' blaze of glory. It's a shameless clone of the first film, and nobody--especially not Aykroyd or director John Landis--seems to care that the story's not nearly as fun as the music that's used to stretch it out. Of course there's a seemingly endless parade of stunts, including a nonstop pileup of police cars that's hilariously absurd, but what really matters here--indeed, the movie's only saving grace--is the great lineup of legendary blues musicians. Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Junior Wells, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Jonny Lang, Eddie Floyd, and Blues Traveler are among the many special guests assembled for the film, and their stellar presence makes you wonder if the revived Blues Brothers shouldn't remain an obscure opening act. The collector's edition DVD includes production photos, the theatrical trailers, and a behind-the-scenes featurette about the making of the film including interviews with the principal cast. The Bride Came C.O.D. William KeighleyRated: Unrated Writer: Kenneth Earl, M.M. Musselman, Julius J. Epstein, Philip G. Epstein Date Added: 18 Oct 2007 Comments: She Came Collect and his heart paid the freight . . . in the year's romantic explosion ! Summary: Two big stars, a fine supporting cast, and plenty of snappy dialogue make "The Bride Came C.O.D." a real treat for fans of screwball comedy. Granted, this isn't exactly a classic of its kind, but the second and final teaming of James Cagney and Bette Davis (their first was in 1934's "Jimmy the Gent") offers plenty of star power, with Jimmy and Bette nicely matched as strong-willed adversaries who inevitably grow fond of each other as the comedy plot unfolds. Cagney plays Steve Collins, a wiseacre pilot who thinks he knows all the angles (especially when they're on a good-looking female) but he gets more than he bargained for when he "kidnaps" 23-year-old Texas oil heiress Joan Winfield (played by then 32-year-old Davis) at the request of her father, who wants to divert her from an ill-advised elopement with an obnoxious bandleader (Jack Carson). After a forced landing in the desert of Death Valley, California, Cagney and Davis proceed to bicker like would-be lovers (for additional comic relief, she has a knack for falling into cactus bushes) before they're taken in by the sole occupant of a ghost town (wonderfully played by Henry Davenport). Add some misadventures in an abandoned coal mine, a frothy Max Steiner score, smooth direction by William Keighley (who'd made "The Fighting 69th" with Cagney a year earlier), and a zippy script by "Casablanca" writers Julius and Philip Epstein, and you've got plenty of lightweight fun that moves right along. Available separately or as part of the "James Cagney Signature Collection", this easy-going comedy comes with a variety of Warner Bros.' "Night at the Movies 1941" bonus features, including two Oscar-nominated shorts (the musical featurette "Forty Boys and a Song" and the Merrie Melodies cartoon "Rhapsody in Rivets"), a vintage newsreel, 1941 movie trailers, and more. Everybody in the hospital, from the cooks who refuse to cook, to the painters who couldn't care less to get their job done, to an African cannibalistic dictator (a la Amin Dada) whom demonstrators want expelled from the hospital and tried, will contribute to making HRH's visit (and Mick Travis's life) a true nightmare.
