Assault on Precinct 13 John CarpenterRated: R Writer: John Carpenter Date Added: 30 Jan 2007 Sound: Dolby Digital 2.0 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: L.A.'s deadliest street gang just declared war on the cops. Summary: John Carpenter's cult classic is a fine example of this director's genius, that has been evidenced only strongly in two later movies: HALLOWEEN and his remake of THE THING. In this tense and brutal film, a soon to be shutdown police station is attacked by a bunch of ruthless gang members. Carpenter takes his time (using his hypnotic musical score) to set up the confrontation, with teasing bits of impending doom, the most noteable being the scene with the little girl and the ice cream man. That scene alone will blow your socks off. The movie's "stars" were unknowns at the time, and this lack of familiarity helps make them more convincing. Austin Stoker as the besieged lieutenant and Darwin Joston as convicted killer Napoleon Wilson have a credible chemistry, and Carpenter regulars Nancy Loomis and Charles Cyphers round out the cast. The movie is like Halloween in its shadowy depiction of the gang members and the violence is almost Western-like in its relentless brutality. I haven't seen the recent remake, but they'd be hard pressed to capture the stark ruthlessness of this well done thriller.

Black Caesar Larry CohenRated: R Writer: Larry Cohen Date Added: 01 Aug 2007 Languages: English Subtitles: French, Spanish Sound: AAC Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Hail Caesar, Godfather of Harlem...The Cat with the .45-Caliber Claws! Summary: Shot on the streets of New York, writer-director Larry Cohen captures the bustle and color of the city in this violent, low-budget crime film. Ambitious Tommy Gibbs (a swaggering, self-confident Fred Williamson) has risen from shoeshine boy to Harlem crime lord, but he wants a bigger piece of the pot. With a racist, high-ranking cop (Art Lund) in his pocket, he begins his expansion with a bloody takeover bid but finds himself betrayed from within and the target of both the cops and the mob. Cohen invests this fast-paced tale (partially inspired by the 1930 gangster classic "Little Caesar" with a touch of "Scarface") with colorful characters (notably a hustling religious leader played by D'Urville Martin), high energy, and a scruffy style. "Black Caesar" is one of the most entertaining movies to come from the 1970s explosion of low-budget black cast genre pictures, more commonly known as "blaxploitation" films. "--Sean Axmaker"

They are so loud and amplified, but the gutbuster is so great. Another great fight scene is the collar belt buckle through a window. One word sums up this movie, WILD. You should check this movie out, the acting is awful and their is too much unnecessary nudity in it. Madd ghetto budget too, but all around worth checking out. Ok, buy this movie and you won't regret it, know I didn't.

Summary: If you liked the old "Kung Fu" TV series, you'll like this movie. Soft spoken and easy going Nick Parker (Rutger Hauer), like Kwai Chang Caine, roams the civilized world in search of ... peace and tranquility? And, like our Kung Fu hero of the Old West, he is ready to come out of his mild mannered shell to defend the weak and fight evil. How he acquired such fighting skills is even stranger than how Kwai Chang Caine became a Kung Fu Master. Especially considering he is blind.

Gone in 60 Seconds H.B. HalickiRated: PG Writer: H.B. Halicki Date Added: 11 Mar 2007 Sound: Dolby Digital 2.0 Picture Format: Letterbox Comments: HIS BUSINESS IS STEALING CARS...when he goes to work, the excitement starts---and GOES---and GOES---and GOES! Summary: When car nut and aspiring B movie maverick H.B. "Toby" Halicki released his debut film, he gave top billing to his car, a yellow 1973 Ford Mustang named Eleanor. That's a good indication of Halicki's priorities in the original car-crunching, tire-squealing drive-in classic "Gone in 60 Seconds". Halicki wrote, produced, starred, and did all of his own extraordinary stunt driving in the picture, the story of a career car thief who makes a deal to steal 48 cars for an overseas smuggler. OK, it's not Shakespeare. The plot is perfunctory at best, and Halicki's all thumbs when it comes to directing his wooden cast, but he gives a crash course in the mechanics of the car-theft biz and tops it off with one of the greatest car chases of all time: a 40-minute finale that roars through five Los Angeles-basin towns and destroys 93 cars in the process. It's a masterpiece of stunt driving, down-and-dirty photography, and sharp, furious cutting; the unsung hero of the picture is editor Warner Leighton, who paces the film perfectly and never lets it stall. Forget the messy Nicolas Cage in-name-only remake, this is outlaw auto cinema at its purest. "--Sean Axmaker"

Grand Theft Auto Ron HowardRated: PG Writer: Rance Howard, Ron Howard Date Added: 18 Oct 2007 Languages: English Subtitles: French Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 Comments: See the greatest cars in the world destroyed! Summary: Ron Howard directs and stars in this Roger Corman-produced feature-length car chase, and "Grand Theft Auto" was made to appeal to the 12-year-old in all of us who likes to see stuff blow up. Poor boy Sam Freeman (Howard) and rich girl Paula Powers (Nancy Morgan) are in love, but Daddy disapproves. They steal the Powers family Rolls Royce for a Vegas elopement, Paula's ex-fiancé puts a bounty on her head, and from then on you can just forget about the plot and watch a zillion cars crash into each other, not to mention a couple of helicopters and an ice-cream truck. In many ways this is a quintessential PG-rated '70s movie: plenty of wholesome fun involving the destruction of public and private property, and every now and then someone says the "S" word to liven things up. And yes, it is surprisingly satisfying to see a Rolls Royce Silver Cloud get smashed all to hell. The 25th-anniversary special-edition DVD includes interviews with Roger Corman and Ron Howard, audio commentary from Corman and Howard, and a reproduction of the original press pack. "--Ali Davis"

The Holy Mountain Alejandro JodorowskyRated: R Writer: Alejandro Jodorowsky Date Added: 30 Jul 2007 Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: Alejandro Jodorowsky stars as The Alchemist in "Holy Mountain"--apt self-casting in this psychedelic masterpiece about Jesus searching for enlightenment. Fusing together many of his previously investigated themes, "Holy Mountain" catalogues a religious icon's surreal journey through magical realms that both mirror reality and verge on the psychotic Financed entirely by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, "Holy Mountain" is a more associative, more abstract, and better version of "El Topo", which also features a protagonist searching for his soul. In "Holy Mountain", Jesus encounters seven magicians who represent each planet, who then converge under the tutelage of The Alchemist to prepare for their life-threatening climb up a sacred hill. Completely original in its blend of Mexican magical surrealism and peace-inducing, humorous commentary on Latin American colonialism and the idiocy of war, "Holy Mountain" is one of the most outlandish examples of avant-garde filmmaking. Wonderfully colorful sets, zany characters in costumes straight out of the subconscious, and an inspired soundtrack, reinforce this absurdist statement about death and rebirth. Though Jodorowsky purportedly deprived himself of sleep to study Zen as research for the film, this is no flowery hippie movie. Carcasses, skinned animals, and even a scene showing frogs and toads dressed as Aztecs and Conquistators who fight until the bloody death, will make a viewer's skin crawl. After being mesmerized by such a powerful vision, the ending, in which Jodorowsky reminds us that "reality awaits," is the most bizarre part. "--Trinie Dalton"
