3-Iron Ki-duk KimRated: R Writer: Ki-duk Kim Date Added: 22 Oct 2007 Languages: Korean Subtitles: English Sound: MP3 Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: Words really do get in the way in "3-Iron", a strange, poignant South Korean film from director Kim Ki-Duk ("Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring") in which the central character doesn't utter a single word. It's not explained why the puck never speaks, but it adds an element of mysticism to this love story that's at once humorous and disturbing. In this case, the knight in shining armor, Tae-Suk (Hee Jae) is a vagabond who supports himself by breaking into people's homes when they're on vacation. But rather than steal possessions, he cooks himself a meal, carefully washes the dishes, takes a bath, does their laundry, fixes anything broken, sleeps in their pajamas, and leaves each home spic and span. One day he trespasses on the home of a battered wife (Seung-yon Lee) who's still home. Fascinated, she leaves her husband and joins in his adventures, until one of their random break-ins gets them in trouble and the couple is forced apart.

Angels With Dirty Faces Michael CurtizRated: Unrated Writer: Rowland Brown, John Wexley Date Added: 30 Jan 2007 Comments: Sensational Human Drama... Terrific Thrills And Suspense! Summary: If watched with an unsentimental eye, this is a preachy and somewhat creaky crime flick. Cagney is great as usual as the tough as nails, street-smart Rocky. Bogart and Sheridan give good support, but are underutilized. What ultimately sinks this film, though, is O'Brien's sermonizing and the hammy performances of the Dead End Kids. Maybe this was timely in 1938, but it simply doesn't stand the test of time. For Cagney diehards only.

Brooklyn Rules Michael CorrenteRated: R Writer: Terence Winter Date Added: 21 Oct 2007 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Not made to be broken Summary: If "Brooklyn Rules", a tale about a trio of good fellas making their way through the mean streets of that New York borough, just happens to remind you of the work of Martin Scorsese, you're not the only one. But even if it's not the most original film in cinematic history, director Michael Corrente's 2007 effort is entertaining enough to hold one's attention for most of its 99 minute running time. Michael (Freddie Prinze Jr., who also supplies the voice-over narration), Bobby (Jerry Ferrara, "Entourage"'s Turtle), and Carmine (Scott Caan, son of James) are the kind of punks who stole money from the church collection plate when they were Catholic schoolboys. Cut to the 1980s, when they're in their twenties, still close pals but following divergent paths: Michael, a smart, ambitious Columbia undergrad, plans to become a lawyer, while nerdy skinflint Bobby ("You're so cheap, if you saw a sign that said 'free slaps in the face,' you'd be the first in line," says Mike) hopes to land a gig at the post office, and the narcissistic Carmine is falling in with the wrong crowd, courtesy of Caesar Manganaro (Alec Baldwin), a captain in the Gambino crime family. Needless to say, conflicts ensue, as Michael scores a WASP girlfriend (an underused Mena Suvari), a mob war breaks out (based on real events, including the murder of big boss Paul Castellano and the ascension of John Gotti), violence strikes tragically close to home, and the f-word is employed liberally. Corrente does a nice job of evoking an era in which Billy Idol and Culture Club ruled the airwaves and Cabbage Patch Dolls were all the rage; and writer Terence Winter, a veteran of "The Sopranos", has an ear for colorful, pithy dialogue ("That cardigan makes you look like the Italian Fred MacMurray" "Depressed? She wouldn't be happy sitting in the lap of Jesus"). But a largely unsatisfying ending underscores the fact that "Brooklyn Rules" is nothing to go to the mattresses for. Extras including commentary by Corrente and Winter and a video accompanying the Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil," which is featured on the soundtrack. "--Sam Graham"

Carlito's Way Brian De PalmaRated: R Writer: Edwin Torres, David Koepp Date Added: 19 Oct 2007 Languages: English Subtitles: French, Spanish Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: Al Pacino cuts a noble figure in this very enjoyable drama by director Brian De Palma ("Scarface"), based on a pair of books by Edwin Torres. Pacino plays a Puerto Rican ex-con trying hard to go straight, but his loyalty to his lowlife attorney (a virtually unrecognizable Sean Penn) and enemies on the street make that choice difficult. Penelope Ann Miller plays, somewhat unlikely, a stripper who has a romance with Pacino's character. The film finds De Palma tempering his more outlandish moves (think of "Body Double" or "Snake Eyes") just as he did with the popular "Untouchables" and "Mission: Impossible". But while "Carlito's Way" was not commercially successful and never rises to the level of greatness, it is a genuinely compelling movie graced with a fine performance by Pacino and a surprising one from Penn. Cops Vs Thugs Kinji FukasakuRated: Unrated Writer: Kazuo Kasahara Date Added: 19 Nov 2007 Languages: Japanese Subtitles: English Sound: MP3 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Kenkei tai soshiki boryoku Summary: Better known in America for his campy cult classics like "Black Lizard", director Kinji Fukasaku made over sixty films spanning forty years, and until now only a handful have been available on DVD. Kino's re-release of Fukasaku's earlier yakuza films, such as "Cops Vs. Thugs" and "Yakuza Graveyard", give viewers a chance to witness Japanese gangster violence in all of its seedy and futile glory. Kurashima City in Western Japan, 1963, has been overtaken by the mob. The Tomoyasu family is feuding with the Ohara/Kawades over a lucrative land deal, and the police force is satiated by yakuza bribes of sake and geishas. Even Detective Kuno (Bunta Sugawara), the police team's most yakuza-savvy member, is loyal to Kenji Hirotani, slated to become boss of the Oharas. When severe violent upheaval, such as a gruesome beheading in the subway station, begins to affect the public sector, Lieutenant Shoichi Kaida (Seizo Fukumoto) is transferred in to take out the trash. He and Kuno butt heads over how to get the feuding under control, until utter tragedy befalls the gangsters as well as the law enforcement. Fukasaku maximizes fight scenes by using a handheld camera to get close-ups of the action. Bodies fly in front of the camera, and blood pools on the floors where the men slaughter each other. "Cops Vs. Thugs" lurks in the shadows of the great samurai films (in fact it was released by samurai-movie makers TOEI Productions) but the yakuza code is less chivalrous than that of samurais. Moreover, cops and yakuza are equally weak, proving post-WWII Japan to be a place void of honor. Also in the tradition of "Tokyo Drifter", "Cops Vs. Thugs" is a noir classic filmed in color, ripe with great battle scenes and vibrant characters. "--Trinie Dalton"

The Departed Martin ScorseseRated: R Writer: William Monahan, Siu Fai Mak, Felix Chong Date Added: 26 Feb 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Lies. Betrayal. Sacrifice. How far will you take it? Summary: Martin Scorsese makes a welcome return to the mean streets (of Boston, in this case) with "The Departed", hailed by many as Scorsese's best film since "Casino". Since this crackling crime thriller is essentially a Scorsese-stamped remake of the acclaimed 2002 Hong Kong thriller "Infernal Affairs", the film was intensely scrutinized by devoted critics and cinephiles, and while Scorsese's intense filmmaking and all-star cast deserve ample acclaim, "The Departed" is also worthy of serious re-assessment, especially with regard to what some attentive viewers described as sloppy craftsmanship (!), notably in terms of mismatched shots and jagged continuity. But no matter where you fall on the Scorsese appreciation scale, there's no denying that "The Departed" is a signature piece of work from one of America's finest directors, designed for maximum impact with a breathtaking series of twists, turns, and violent surprises. It's an intricate cat-and-mouse game, but this time the cat and mouse are both moles: Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) is an ambitious cop on the rise, planted in the Boston police force by criminal kingpin Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a hot-tempered police cadet who's been artificially disgraced and then planted into Costello's crime operation as a seemingly trustworthy soldier. As the multilayered plot unfolds (courtesy of a scorching adaptation by "Kingdom of Heaven" screenwriter William Monahan), Costigan and Sullivan conduct a volatile search for each other (they're essentially looking for "themselves") while simultaneously wooing the psychiatrist (Vera Farmiga) assigned to treat their crime-driven anxieties.

Fatal Move is a gripping underworld saga rich with themes of brotherhood and betrayal, but director Law makes sure to give the core audience what they're really looking for. Fatal Move delivers visceral, eye-opening action choreographed by Li Chung Chi (Invisible Target), and handily earns its Category III rating due to harrowing, exceptional violence. Gang Related Jim KoufRated: R Writer: Jim Kouf Date Added: 09 Mar 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: What happens when the worst criminals are the ones that carry badges? Summary: A classic example of a good idea ruined by Hollywood formulas. Jim Belushi and Tupac Shakur (in his last performance) are two corrupt cops with an effective scheme: they rob and kill drug dealers. Unfortunately, one of their victims turns out to be an undercover agent for the DEA, and the two bad cops have to scramble to find a suspect to pin the murder on. Soon they're caught in a web of missing evidence, false witnesses, and frayed nerves--"Gang Related" could have been a lean film noir, slowly tightening until the men break under the pressure. Gang Tapes Adam RippRated: R Writer: Steven Wolfson, Adam Ripp Date Added: 09 Mar 2007 Comments: A coming of Rage story Summary: This movie is a must see for anyone who enjoys genuine, true-to-life films. This film takes audiences to a world most of them would never see otherwise. I was born and raised in the streets of Long Beach and Los Angeles and was forced to experience in actuality the scenarios acted out in the film. I can attest to every scene in the film as being accurate in their portrayals of gang culture. I watched Boyz in the Hood, South Central, Colors, Menace to Society, Baby Boy and many other films portraying gang life in LA county, but all were more about sticking to the story line than about capturing the essense of the subject(s). If you like big budget actions films with gang members being shown as stunt men fliping over cars while shooting an assault rifle, then this film will not tickle your tastes. But if you want a quick lesson on true gang life with no sugar on top, Gang Tapes does the job.

Lansky John McNaughtonRated: R Writer: Uri Dan, Dennis Eisenberg, Eli Landau, David Mamet Date Added: 22 Aug 2009 Sound: AAC Picture Format: Academy Ratio Comments: The Mind That Organized Crime. Summary: This is the telling of the life of organized crime boss, Meyer Lansky, as remembered by him as a very old man who is moving about the world looking for some country that will take him in since the US courts have put out an extradition order for him to stand trial. It tells of a young man growing up in the Jewish ghettos of America's big cities at the turn of the century and of his bright intelligence which he used for moving into crime. "I'm only a gambler," he claimed, "just like most all Americans." When asked by a reporter to comment on the killings that occurred under his leadership he declined, thereby making this film's thrust that of personalities and relationships rather than of acts of violence or the workings of corrupt deeds.

New Jack City Mario Van PeeblesRated: R Writer: Thomas Lee Wright, Barry Michael Cooper Date Added: 18 Oct 2007 Languages: English Subtitles: English, French Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: They're a new breed of gangster. The new public enemy. The new family of crime. Summary: Some pundits called it a flawed, exploitative action film that glamorized drug dealing and the luxury of a lucrative criminal lifestyle, spawning a trend of films that attracted youth gangs and provoked violence in theaters. Others hailed it as a breakthrough movie that depicted drug dealers as ruthless, corrupt, and evil, leading dead-end lives that no rational youth would want to emulate. However you interpret it, "New Jack City" is still one of the first and best films of the 1990s to crack open the underworld of cocaine and peer inside with its eyes wide open. It's also the film that established Wesley Snipes as an actor to watch, with enough charisma to bring an insidious quality of seduction to his role as coke-lord Nino Brown, and enough intelligence to portray a character deluded by his own sense of indestructible power. Director Mario Van Peebles stretched his otherwise-limited talent to bring vivid authenticity and urgency to this crime story, and subplots involving a pair of tenacious cops (Ice-T, Judd Nelson) and a recovering coke addict (Chris Rock) provide additional dramatic tension. Although some critics may hesitate to admit it, "New Jack City" deserves mention in any serious discussion about African American filmmakers and influential films. "--Jeff Shannon"

The Petrified Forest Archie MayoRated: Unrated Writer: Robert E. Sherwood, Charles Kenyon, Delmer Daves Date Added: 13 Jun 2007 Summary: Adapted from a hit Broadway play by Robert Sherwood and starring original cast members Leslie Howard and Humphrey Bogart, this 1936 suspense drama is set in an aging desert roadhouse café, where a young woman (Bette Davis) dreams of escaping a dead-end existence spent with her father and a lunkheaded, would-be suitor. Along comes a penniless poet (Howard), a wanderer who has made a mess of his life and crossed the hot sands as a symbolic act of meaningful futility. Davis's waitress is instantly enchanted, and in short order they begin talking about heading out to the world together. Then a twist: the world comes to them--in the form of escaped convicts, led by the monosyllabic Duke Mantee (Bogart), who secretly agrees to the poet's request that the fugitive gangster kill him. Directed by Archie Mayo ("The Great American Broadcast"), much of the film, perhaps inevitably, looks set-bound. Most of the action occurs in the café, and the script's tension sadly dissipates a bit as villains and hostages stay glued to their seats. The film's enduring appeal has everything to do with the leading performances: the fascinating alchemy of Howard's ethereal air, Davis's sexy urgency, and Bogart's bemused menace. If the story feels a trifle dated and perhaps a bit smug, the actors make it compelling nonetheless. "--Tom Keogh"

Point Blank John BoormanRated: Unrated Writer: Donald E. Westlake, Alexander Jacobs, David Newhouse, Rafe Newhouse Date Added: 17 Jun 2007 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: There are two kinds of people in his up-tight world: his victims and his women. And sometimes you can't tell them apart. Summary: Walker (Lee Marvin) strides through Los Angeles with the steel-eyed stare of a stone-cold killer, or perhaps a ghost. Betrayed by his wife and best friend, who gun him down point-blank and leave him for dead after a successful heist, Walker blasts his way up the criminal food chain in a quest for revenge. Did he survive the shooting or return from the grave, or is it all a dying dream? The question is left in the air in John Boorman's modern film noir, a brutal revenge thriller based on Richard Stark's novel "The Hunter" (remade by Brian Helgeland as "Payback"), set in the impersonal concrete and steel canyons of Los Angeles and eerily empty cells of Alcatraz. Walker kills without remorse, guided by shadowy "informant" Keenan Wynn, whose own agenda is carefully concealed, and assisted by Angie Dickinson, as he desperately searches for someone, anyone, who can just give him his money. But if Walker is an extreme incarnation of the revenge-driven noir antihero, the modern syndicate has been transformed into a world of paper jungles and corporate businessmen, an alienating concept to the two-fisted, gun-wielding gangster. Boorman creates a hard, austere look for the film and fragments the story with flashes of painful memory, grafting the New Wave onto old genres with confidence and style. Haunting and brutal, "Point Blank" remains one of the most distinctive crime thrillers ever made. "--Sean Axmaker"

Jolly Roger: Massacre at Cutter's Cove Gary JonesRated: R Writer: Gary Jones, Jeff Miller Date Added: 18 Oct 2007 Comments: Some Things Should Stay Lost at Sea. Cutter's Cove has just gone through a hurricane and three teenage couples are having a cookout on the beach. One of the couples, using the beach because getting a room is too much of a bother, finds a giant chest, open it up and discover a skull. Yes, that is right, boys and girls, it is (wait for it) a dead man's chest. Having found what is either (a) an ancient relic of some archeological value or (b) the remains of a recent murder victim, the guy tosses the skull in the ocean to get back to the business in hand. However, the next thing we know the Jolly Roger is back in business and announcing his presence with authority.
