Summary: Words really do get in the way in "3-Iron", a strange, poignant South Korean film from director Kim Ki-Duk ("Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring") in which the central character doesn't utter a single word. It's not explained why the puck never speaks, but it adds an element of mysticism to this love story that's at once humorous and disturbing. In this case, the knight in shining armor, Tae-Suk (Hee Jae) is a vagabond who supports himself by breaking into people's homes when they're on vacation. But rather than steal possessions, he cooks himself a meal, carefully washes the dishes, takes a bath, does their laundry, fixes anything broken, sleeps in their pajamas, and leaves each home spic and span. One day he trespasses on the home of a battered wife (Seung-yon Lee) who's still home. Fascinated, she leaves her husband and joins in his adventures, until one of their random break-ins gets them in trouble and the couple is forced apart.
Adding in a reliance on some stunning visuals, "3-Iron" does a good job filling itself out in a non-implicit way. In this case, compliments and banter aren't needed to tell you that the pair has found a bond that no one can wrest away from them. The ending may tickle suspended reality (it's either becoming supernatural or someone's a lot more nimble than we thought), but it's still a poetic conclusion to this twisted fairy tale. "--Ellen A. Summary: If watched with an unsentimental eye, this is a preachy and somewhat creaky crime flick. Cagney is great as usual as the tough as nails, street-smart Rocky. Bogart and Sheridan give good support, but are underutilized. What ultimately sinks this film, though, is O'Brien's sermonizing and the hammy performances of the Dead End Kids. Maybe this was timely in 1938, but it simply doesn't stand the test of time. For Cagney diehards only.

Summary: Without a doubt I can say that A Bittersweet Life is one of the best revenge movies I've ever seen, and is just as captivating as Park Chan Wook's Old Boy or Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill. The story follows Sun-woo, a hotel manager who has got to where he is by carrying out certain jobs for a mob boss called Kang. Just before Kang goes out of town for a few days he asks Sun-woo to keep an eye on his young girlfriend as he suspects she's being unfaithful. However when Sun-woo catches the girlfriend with another guy he can't bring himself to finish the job. When Kang finds out about his defiance Sun-woo soon finds himself fighting for his life against the people he once called family.

You can probably tell by the plot that this isn't the most complex film ever made and is nothing like Old Boy where you have to follow the clues right up to the very end. In fact A Bittersweet Life is the exact opposite of this; from the beginning you know that the story is heading down a vengeful path of bullets and corpses that can only end in tears. I have no doubt that when people watch this they'll be comparing it to Old Boy but although they are both stylish Korean revenge movies I'd have to say that's where the similarities stop. Old Boy was an extreme new take on the revenge genre that mixed action with a brilliant psychological story but A Bittersweet Life has a much simpler straight forward story with slightly more emphasis on the action and a style that pays homage to classic noir thrillers. That's not to say that A Bittersweet Life isn't as good but just different.

Kim Ji-Woon has done an excellent job at directing A Bittersweet Life; and for me this is on the same level as his earlier film A Tale Of Two Sisters, which was also amazing. Every frame is filled with the type of style that other directors dream of (I literally found myself in awe after only watching the opening sequence). Byung-hun Lee (JSA, Addicted) also has to take credit for playing the character of Sun-woo perfectly and is definitely one of the main aspects that make this film great.

Overall this is one of the best revenge films I've seen that's filled with style, depth and above all else class. With a perfect mix of Korean drama and bloody action there is enough here to please everyone.

Summary: If "Brooklyn Rules", a tale about a trio of good fellas making their way through the mean streets of that New York borough, just happens to remind you of the work of Martin Scorsese, you're not the only one. But even if it's not the most original film in cinematic history, director Michael Corrente's 2007 effort is entertaining enough to hold one's attention for most of its 99 minute running time. Michael (Freddie Prinze Jr., who also supplies the voice-over narration), Bobby (Jerry Ferrara, "Entourage"'s Turtle), and Carmine (Scott Caan, son of James) are the kind of punks who stole money from the church collection plate when they were Catholic schoolboys. Cut to the 1980s, when they're in their twenties, still close pals but following divergent paths: Michael, a smart, ambitious Columbia undergrad, plans to become a lawyer, while nerdy skinflint Bobby ("You're so cheap, if you saw a sign that said 'free slaps in the face,' you'd be the first in line," says Mike) hopes to land a gig at the post office, and the narcissistic Carmine is falling in with the wrong crowd, courtesy of Caesar Manganaro (Alec Baldwin), a captain in the Gambino crime family. Needless to say, conflicts ensue, as Michael scores a WASP girlfriend (an underused Mena Suvari), a mob war breaks out (based on real events, including the murder of big boss Paul Castellano and the ascension of John Gotti), violence strikes tragically close to home, and the f-word is employed liberally. Corrente does a nice job of evoking an era in which Billy Idol and Culture Club ruled the airwaves and Cabbage Patch Dolls were all the rage; and writer Terence Winter, a veteran of "The Sopranos", has an ear for colorful, pithy dialogue ("That cardigan makes you look like the Italian Fred MacMurray"… "Depressed? She wouldn't be happy sitting in the lap of Jesus"). But a largely unsatisfying ending underscores the fact that "Brooklyn Rules" is nothing to go to the mattresses for. Summary: Al Pacino cuts a noble figure in this very enjoyable drama by director Brian De Palma ("Scarface"), based on a pair of books by Edwin Torres. Pacino plays a Puerto Rican ex-con trying hard to go straight, but his loyalty to his lowlife attorney (a virtually unrecognizable Sean Penn) and enemies on the street make that choice difficult. Penelope Ann Miller plays, somewhat unlikely, a stripper who has a romance with Pacino's character. The film finds De Palma tempering his more outlandish moves (think of "Body Double" or "Snake Eyes") just as he did with the popular "Untouchables" and "Mission: Impossible". But while "Carlito's Way" was not commercially successful and never rises to the level of greatness, it is a genuinely compelling movie graced with a fine performance by Pacino and a surprising one from Penn. Well, they just dropped a few things and sell it for a few dollars less.

One of my all time favorite movies nonetheless, I'll just trade it in for the other edition at some point.

Summary: Better known in America for his campy cult classics like "Black Lizard", director Kinji Fukasaku made over sixty films spanning forty years, and until now only a handful have been available on DVD. Kino's re-release of Fukasaku's earlier yakuza films, such as "Cops Vs. Thugs" and "Yakuza Graveyard", give viewers a chance to witness Japanese gangster violence in all of its seedy and futile glory. Kurashima City in Western Japan, 1963, has been overtaken by the mob. The Tomoyasu family is feuding with the Ohara/Kawades over a lucrative land deal, and the police force is satiated by yakuza bribes of sake and geishas. Even Detective Kuno (Bunta Sugawara), the police team's most yakuza-savvy member, is loyal to Kenji Hirotani, slated to become boss of the Oharas. When severe violent upheaval, such as a gruesome beheading in the subway station, begins to affect the public sector, Lieutenant Shoichi Kaida (Seizo Fukumoto) is transferred in to take out the trash. He and Kuno butt heads over how to get the feuding under control, until utter tragedy befalls the gangsters as well as the law enforcement. Fukasaku maximizes fight scenes by using a handheld camera to get close-ups of the action. Bodies fly in front of the camera, and blood pools on the floors where the men slaughter each other. "Cops Vs. Thugs" lurks in the shadows of the great samurai films (in fact it was released by samurai-movie makers TOEI Productions) but the yakuza code is less chivalrous than that of samurais. Moreover, cops and yakuza are equally weak, proving post-WWII Japan to be a place void of honor. Also in the tradition of "Tokyo Drifter", "Cops Vs. Thugs" is a noir classic filmed in color, ripe with great battle scenes and vibrant characters. "--Trinie Dalton"

Summary: Martin Scorsese makes a welcome return to the mean streets (of Boston, in this case) with "The Departed", hailed by many as Scorsese's best film since "Casino". Since this crackling crime thriller is essentially a Scorsese-stamped remake of the acclaimed 2002 Hong Kong thriller "Infernal Affairs", the film was intensely scrutinized by devoted critics and cinephiles, and while Scorsese's intense filmmaking and all-star cast deserve ample acclaim, "The Departed" is also worthy of serious re-assessment, especially with regard to what some attentive viewers described as sloppy craftsmanship (!), notably in terms of mismatched shots and jagged continuity. But no matter where you fall on the Scorsese appreciation scale, there's no denying that "The Departed" is a signature piece of work from one of America's finest directors, designed for maximum impact with a breathtaking series of twists, turns, and violent surprises. It's an intricate cat-and-mouse game, but this time the cat and mouse are both moles: Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) is an ambitious cop on the rise, planted in the Boston police force by criminal kingpin Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a hot-tempered police cadet who's been artificially disgraced and then planted into Costello's crime operation as a seemingly trustworthy soldier. As the multilayered plot unfolds (courtesy of a scorching adaptation by "Kingdom of Heaven" screenwriter William Monahan), Costigan and Sullivan conduct a volatile search for each other (they're essentially looking for "themselves") while simultaneously wooing the psychiatrist (Vera Farmiga) assigned to treat their crime-driven anxieties.
Such convenient coincidences might sink a lesser film, but "The Departed" is so electrifying that you barely notice the plot-holes. And while Nicholson's profane swagger is too much "Jack" and not enough "Costello," he's still a joy to watch, especially in a film that's additionally energized by memorable (and frequently hilarious) supporting roles for Alec Baldwin, Mark Wahlberg, and a host of other big-name performers. "The Departed" also makes clever and plot-dependent use of cell-phones, to the extent that it couldn't exist without them. Powered by Scorsese's trademark use of well-chosen soundtrack songs (from vintage rock to Puccini's operas), "The Departed" may not be perfect, but it's one helluva ride for moviegoers, proving popular enough to become the biggest box-office hit of Scorsese's commercially rocky career. Fatal Move delivers visceral, eye-opening action choreographed by Li Chung Chi (Invisible Target), and handily earns its Category III rating due to harrowing, exceptional violence. Those who enjoy their gangster sagas with a generous helping of blood should be quite happy with what Law has cooked up here.

Big Brother Lung (Sammo Hung) is the head of a strong, multi-level triad organization involved in multiple illicit activities. The anti-triad cops, led by Inspector Liu (Danny Lee) are watching their every move, but business has never been better, as Lung's brothers, including trusted lieutenant Tung (Simon Yam) and deadly enforcer Tin Hung (Wu Jing), are there to back Lung whenever necessary. But empires are sometimes built on the bodies of its people, and among Lung's organization are the unsatisfied, the power-hungry, and even those with private, deadly vendettas. The internal strife starts low in the organization, with lower bosses and their wives angling for power, but the corruption permeates every level of the triad - even Lung's inner circle. Though Lung and his loyal followers seemingly have all the angles covered, there may be some betrayers and some battles that they don't expect. Soon they're caught in a web of missing evidence, false witnesses, and frayed nerves--"Gang Related" could have been a lean film noir, slowly tightening until the men break under the pressure. Unfortunately, this isn't the 1940s, and suddenly the plot takes an absurd twist into the most melodramatic coincidence imaginable. It's too bad. Summary: This movie is a must see for anyone who enjoys genuine, true-to-life films. This film takes audiences to a world most of them would never see otherwise. I was born and raised in the streets of Long Beach and Los Angeles and was forced to experience in actuality the scenarios acted out in the film. I can attest to every scene in the film as being accurate in their portrayals of gang culture. I watched Boyz in the Hood, South Central, Colors, Menace to Society, Baby Boy and many other films portraying gang life in LA county, but all were more about sticking to the story line than about capturing the essense of the subject(s). If you like big budget actions films with gang members being shown as stunt men fliping over cars while shooting an assault rifle, then this film will not tickle your tastes. But if you want a quick lesson on true gang life with no sugar on top, Gang Tapes does the job.

Eddie's grit and bluster suit him perfectly for this existence, and he's soon a success, so he hires Army buddy Lloyd (Lynn) as consigliere, then teams up with George (Bogart), a liquor smuggler who plays a much dirtier game. Racketeering and murder are his methods, and he drags Eddie down with him. When Prohibition ends and the stock market crashes, Eddie loses everything and takes to the bottle himself.
The film is a bit schematic. The three stars are archetypes: Cagney the good boy gone bad, Bogart the bad boy who stays bad, and Lynn the good boy who stays good. Still, it packs quite an emotional wallop--Cagney shows extraordinary range, going from green boy to swaggering gangster to broken man, and Bogart has rarely seemed more purely evil than he does here. He kills for the sheer pleasure of it; it's truly frightening to see. The final scene is a stunning shootout between Cagney and Bogart. With lesser actors this film could be pure hokum. With Cagney and Bogart, it attains catharsis. "Laura Mirsky"

Summary: "Jolly Roger: Massacre at Cutter's Cove" is, as the title might suggest, a splatter flick in which the killer is a pirate. Since he died hundreds of years ago and this story is set in the present, Jolly Roger is in point of fact a resurrected pirate. Cutter's Cove has just gone through a hurricane and three teenage couples are having a cookout on the beach. One of the couples, using the beach because getting a room is too much of a bother, finds a giant chest, open it up and discover a skull. Yes, that is right, boys and girls, it is (wait for it) a dead man's chest. Having found what is either (a) an ancient relic of some archeological value or (b) the remains of a recent murder victim, the guy tosses the skull in the ocean to get back to the business in hand. However, the next thing we know the Jolly Roger is back in business and announcing his presence with authority.



The idea behind this movie is not the skull and crossbones known as the Jolly Roger, but rather the old pirate song about "Sixteen men on a dead man's chest...yo ho ho and a bottle of rum." The variation here is that Jolly Roger needs sixteen heads to put IN the aforementioned dead man's chest so he can get his treasure back. His victims would appear to be arbitrary, but there ends up being a logic behind it all (so to speak). This would be helpful for killing Jolly Roger and make Cutter's Cove safe once again for beach parties. Meanwhile, having survived the initial bloodbath, Alex (Tom Nagle) and Jessie (Kristina Korn), are the chief suspects. They are not covered in blood or anything tangible, but the local cop (Tom Downey) does not have any suspects, does not believe their story, and has learned that nobody in town has rented a pirate costume. He is not too stupid as far as cops in horror films go, but when the rules require the zombie killer to take 16 heads, you know he is at least going to get well into double digits.



Overall, director Gary Jones ("Crocodile 2: Death Swamp") and his co-writer, first time scritper Jeff Miller (XVII), go for humor rather than fright. We are encouraged to want to watch these sixteen people die and to enjoy the riffs by Jolly Roger (Rhett Giles), and if this movie is remembered by anybody for anything it will be for Jolly Roger getting a lap dance at a Cutter's Cove club (a zombie getting a lap dance will tend to stick in your memory far longer than it deserves to be, I can tell you that much). All things considered this is a splatter flick in which they just seem to be doing everything by the numbers (e.g., every woman whose naked breasts are seen ends up getting killed). The two kids who are going to survive the bloodletting are more concerned with saving their lives than making out, even if we now live in a world where all explanations come from the Internet rather than creepy looking old folks in town. But a movie that does everything by the numbers should not be taking two steps backwards like this one does to get to this ending. There are several naked women and a lot more blood courtesy of halfway decent special effects. However, ultimately this is an empty little horror film, and I only rounded up because of the aforementioned lap dance (but more for the audacity of the scene than its execution; plus, I feel bad about doing it).

Summary: King Hu belongs to a dubious group of filmmakers: the neglected; alongside the likes of Satyajit Ray, Mikio Naruse, Youssef Chahine and Ritwik Ghatak. As with all of those filmmakers, King Hu's work - when available at all (his legendary DRAGON INN is nearly impossible to find), is only available in dubious quality - fuzzy DVDs, cropped or pan-and-scan editions, VCDs, DVRs.

This is a shame - Hu's flair for history recalls Kenji Mizoguchi or Satyajit Ray, his personal and highly evolved spiritual ideas evoke Andrei Tarkovsky, and his flair for both landscape and action is reminiscent of Kurosawa or John Ford.

That noted, LEGEND OF THE MOUNTAIN - one of the handful of King Hu's films currently available - seems like lesser Hu. I'd say 'seems like,' because it's companion film, RAINING IN THE MOUNTAIN (the two films are apparently interrelated) has been mostly unavailable on VHS or DVD, save for a Japanese DVD edition (no English subs) recently released. Without seeing both, I'd guess that it would be difficult to evaluate in a thorough fashion.

Here we have a ghost story, heavily infused with Buddhist mysticism: a young, and rather earnest scholar (Hsu Feng, who also starred in Hu's extraordinary A TOUCH OF ZEN) retreats to semi-abandoned fortress in an isolated mountain range to study and translate an ancient sutra. Upon arrival, he immediately encounters a small, but eclectic cast of locals; his encounters with them propel him into a series of intrigues that ultimately escalates into a good-vs-evil struggle.

The story recalls A TOUCH OF ZEN in its' ambitions and complexity, but compressed into the 110-minute running time here, the entire story (and the acting) feels a little forced, and a little rushed. The cinematography (the film was shot on location in South Korea) seems to be dazzling, though currently available editions of the film are fairly grainy, and night scenes are very indistinct. Hu's sense of action fails him here; the majority of it seems very half-hearted, compared to earlier films, and Hu's sense of slapstick (one gets the distinct impression that some commerical pressures may have intruded upon this film) threatens to overtake that more supernatural sides to the story.

That being said, the film STILL looks good, and manages to be entertaining - and there are a few set pieces here that are breathtaking, in spite of the flaws also evident here. Perhaps for fans of Hu; but if you're one of those and you haven't seen this, you should.

Summary: You hate to see good movies exploited into multiple sequels of varying worth, all of which tend to reflect poorly on the original. The Exorcist, Rocky, and Thomas Harris's character of Hannibal Lecter come to mind. We have a not-so-new group to add to this, and that's the Ringu Anthology of Terror (Rasen/Ringu/Ringu 2/Ringu 0).

Ringu was a good movie. To an unsuspecting American audience, it reinvigorated the horror genre, which year-after-year churns out more garbage than a sewage plant. But Ringu 0 failed in its attempt to bring Sadako to life in a satisfying manner. We saw her, a rather demure figure, but the explanation provided for her backstory was neither persuasive nor reasonable. There was, for those interested, a different explanation in the book that did make a bit more sense, but given the overall quality of the film, I doubt that it would have made a difference. Sadako does creep us out in the end with her disjointed zombie/skeleton walk, and it's unsettling, but two seconds of unsettling film doesn't cut it.

Rasen, the original sequel to Ringu, the two films released concurrently, gave us answers to how Sadako spread the curse, but the film degenerated into such unbelievable ridiculousness that they decided another sequel was in order, so here we are with Ringu 2.

Like Rasen, this picks up where Ringu left off. But instead of introducing a new character, it focuses on Ryuji's girlfriend, who we met briefly in Ringu, Mai. It also completely dismisses Rasen, as if the film never existed. Key plot elements that happen in Rasen don't happen here, and we see much of Yoichi, who we know from past films (one of them being Rasen, mainly) inherited his father's telepathy. Like Rasen, Ringu 2 attempts to explain Sadako and the curse. We learn that Sadako was alive for about twenty-eight of the thirty years that she was entombed in the well, although how she survived without food is anybody's guess.

This film fails for the same reason that Rasen failed - it tried to define the paranormal.

I've now seen all four films that comprise the Ringu Anthology of Terror, and am unsatisfied. They should have stopped with Ringu.

It doesn't seem that we're getting the picture on this side of the ocean either, as another Ring movie is being made. The second movie didn't do as well as the first, critically or financially.
