8 Masters Joseph KuoRated: Unrated Writer: Ping Han Chiang, Joseph Kuo, Ming-lien Tsui Date Added: 06 Oct 2008 Languages: Chinese Subtitles: English Sound: AAC Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: EIGHT MASTERS (1977) is part of the 18 BRONZEMEN series of kung fu films produced in Taiwan by Joseph Kuo. Not exactly a sequel to the previous films in the series (although it was long available only in a ... VHS edition under the title, 18 BRONZEMEN 3), it nonetheless features series regular Carter Wong as a student who undergoes years of training at Shaolin Temple, beginning as a child, and graduates by fighting the 18 Bronzemen in a series of contests. After the first half-hour, the story takes a different turn as Chu Shiao Chieh (Carter) reunites with his now-blind mother and meets Ming Chu (Lung Chun Erh), the girl who's been taking care of her and whom Mom now wants Carter to marry. Unfortunately, the Eight Masters of the title won't let things rest and persist in harassing Carter, demanding a match with him in order to allow them to avenge the death of one of their number at the hands of Carter's father (in a fight seen under the film's opening credits).

Beach of the War Gods Raymond Chow Man WaiRated: Writer: Yu Wang Date Added: 27 Jan 2007 Languages: Chinese Subtitles: English Sound: Dolby Summary: The Chinese protagonists in Wang Yu's 1972 epic action picture, a prime specimen of mainstream Hong Kong action cinema, all wear peraly white during the final sea-front battle sequence, while their Japanese pirate foes wear inky black. That's proof positive that actor-director Wang (a staple Shaw Brothers star to the 1960s) is a staunch swordplay traditionalist. The style, the pace, and even the music may recall Akira Kurosawa, but here the Japanese are as purely evil as the Nazis in a WWII flick. Wang's stalwart Hisao Feng is a wandering swordsman (complete with his very own fuzz-tone guitar theme) who returns home to discover a pirate threat to his coastal village. He assembles an assortment of warriors, guys with handles like Spearman Li and Lightning Fist Hung; even a taciturn knife thrower who as to be badgered into helping out, like Jamese Coburn in the The Magnficient Seven. Hsiao and his pals then train the peasant villagers to fend off the Japanese Menace. The last 20 minutes of the movie are nothing but bloody sword fighting; Hsiao kills the Japanese commander (who spouts blood majestically, like Tatsuya Nakadai in Kurosawa's Sanjuro) and then keels over himself, a photogenic martyr to the anti-Japanese cause.

It's completely unwatchable. There is obviously a manufacturing quality problem here. Perhaps Videoasia tried to encrypt this and just ruined it, or else it's just a crappy bootleg burned so badly it won't play right much past the menu. Either way, I would never willingly choose Videoasia products over any other distributor's again. 1 star is really too much for a product that is essentially worthless due to extremely poor quality manufacture.

A Better Tomorrow John WooRated: R Writer: Hing-Ka Chan, Suk-Wah Leung, John Woo Date Added: 19 Oct 2007 Languages: Cantonese Subtitles: English Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: The movie that began it all......... Summary: The John Woo gangster classic that started it all, a romantic, violent, swirlingly stylish melodrama about dueling brothers--with a mesmerizing lead performance by Hong Kong's favorite actor, Chow Yun-Fat. In repose, Chow's sleepy magnetism recalls the glory days of Robert Mitchum, Steve McQueen, and Takakura Ken; when he's stepping high, Chow has a unique, ebullient star presence, a man who embraces life so unselfconsciously that he becomes vulnerable to all kinds of suffering and heartache (he endures masochistic megadoses of violence here). The sequence in which Chow's Mark avenges his betrayed best friend---by blasting his way into, and then out of, a Chinese restaurant, twin .45s blazing---is a swashbuckling standout. Woo's film technique may have been more polished in later efforts, but "Tomorrow" has a direct emotional power that is still unique. Kung fu star of the 1970s, Ti Lung is also terrific here as the 40ish established mobster, relied upon by all, who allows conflicting loyalties toward Mark and toward his younger brother, now a cop, to undermine the stability of his position. "--David Chute"

Black Mask Daniel LeeRated: R Writer: Teddy Chan, Ann Hui Date Added: 07 Feb 2007 Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: Take the art direction and set design from "The Crow" and "Batman". Add a male-bonding element reminiscent of "The Killer" or "Hard-Boiled". Stir in a plot line about some top-secret near-invincible bionic-man superwarriors taking over the drug trade in Hong Kong, with only one man who can stop them. Season with a high body count, lots of explosions and running gun battles, and spectacular hand-to-hand fight sequences. Top off with a soupçon of cheesy comic relief and a generous helping of atrocious dubbing. Bake for too long, then remove from oven and allow to cool until thoroughly stale. The result: "Black Mask". Sure, it's a preposterous recipe (bet you didn't know that LED readouts will show up on an X-ray), but it's stylishly prepared and presented, with high-octane editing, wild camera angles, and a neo-Goth feel all around. Of course it's all about the remarkable Jet Li, the fight scenes, and the postindustrial art direction. Those who come expecting a high-concept, intelligent thriller will be left with indigestion, but Hong Kong action fans who live and die for insane stunts and head-spinning martial arts scenes will have their appetites sated by this dish. It's very interesting to see the influence that John Woo's hand continues to have on American and HK action thrillers, years after his seminal films with Chow Yun-fat. It'll be even more interesting to see how films like "Black Mask" hold up in the future. Just don't take it too seriously and this movie works just fine. Oh, and the title? It comes from when Jet Li switches from his mild-mannered librarian persona to butt-kicking superhero, complete with mask and hat à la "The Green Hornet"'s Cato. "--Jerry Renshaw"

Bullet in the Head John WooRated: Unrated Writer: Janet Chun, Patrick Leung Date Added: 08 Feb 2007 Languages: Chinese Subtitles: English Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 Picture Format: Letterbox Summary: The 1990 film "Bullet in the Head" engages at every turn. At once a political epic, a story about childhood friends and loyalty, as well as a tale of corruption and war, John Woo's action-packed face-off contrasts '60s idealism--the Beatles and Elvis--against the shifting tide in the East. It's plain that Woo has pulled his trio of heroes straight from Sergio Leone's "Once Upon a Time in America" as well as Michael Cimino's "The Deer Hunter", but there are bits of Nicholas Ray's "Rebel Without a Cause" tossed in for good measure. The old Chinese way of life is fading in the face of the emergent Vietnam War and Chairman Mao's Red Army, and Hong Kong struggles under archaic British rule. Three friends--Ben (Tony Leung), Frank (Jacky Cheung), and Paul (Waise Lee)--rub up against gang warfare, capitalism, and opportunism in a life that is strongly tinged by Western culture. Ben falls in love and wants to marry Jane (Fennie Yuen). Frank has borrowed money from a warlord to pay for his pal's bridal bash but a rival group, led by Ringo and his thugs, are hell-bent on keeping loose-cannon Frank from keeping his promise. The boys kill Ringo in a face-off and the cops come looking for them, separating Ben and Jane. The trio escapes to exploited luck-of-the-draw Saigon to make their fortunes. Luck, however, isn't with them. In a violent, balletic dance to honor, greed, and a teenage pledge that is challenged with adulthood, "Bullet in the Head" is sentimental despite its exquisitely choreographed blood bath; it's steeped in the kind of code-of-ethics morality that has been the glue of buddy films since the beginning of cinematic time. "Bullet in the Head" is a tale of love and betrayal played out against a backdrop of wartime chaos, and while Woo had made other vital and vibrant movies--"The Killer", "Hard Boiled", and "A Better Tomorrow"--none were as impassioned as "Bullet in the Head". That it retains its innocence at all is a tribute to this Hong Kong action auteur, who brands his movies with visual flair as well as a palette splattered with blood. "--Paula Nechak"

Summary: Before Bruce Lee became a superstar and before the kung fu movie genre exploded into a phenomenon, there was one-time swimming ace Jimmy Wang Yu, Shaw Brothers’ first “million dollar” star who helped to revitalize the swordplay genre by starring in Cheng Cheh’s ONE-ARMED SWORDSMAN. Three years later and with only a handful of movies under his belt, Wang Yu stepped out from the shadow of his mentor Chang Cheh to write, direct and star in the one movie that sparked Hong Kong’s kung fu movie boom in the ’70s. Wang Yu is a principled kung fu student who finds his world thrown asunder when a rival of his master returns with three Japanese karate masters (led by Lo Lieh) who possess no respect for life. They mercilessly kill or maim everyone in the school and leave Wang Yu wounded, in hiding and hungry for revenge. Unable to best their karate skills, Wang Yu recalls his master’s advice and begins training in the only known method of countering karate (within the movie that is), a combination of iron palm and light step kung fu. When the Japanese and their Chinese pal set up a crooked gambling hall and protection racket, Wang Yu dons a surgical mask and begins performing operations on baddies with his iron fists. Shuriken-tossing kendo experts are called in and Wang Yu battles his way through them and on to a showdown with the Japanese karate masters. --Mark Pollard, KungFuCinema.com

City Hunter Jing WongRated: PG-13 Writer: Tsukasa Hôjô, Jing Wong Date Added: 29 Jul 2007 Languages: Chinese Subtitles: English Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: Hong Kong superstar Jackie Chan gives his self-mocking humor full flourish in "City Hunter", adapted from a Japanese comic book. But that doesn't mean there isn't a solid dose of action--after a brilliantly cartoonish opening, the movie settles into a half-comedy, half-thriller variation on "Die Hard", in which Eurotrash terrorists have hijacked a plush ocean cruise liner and super-detective Ryu Saeba (Chan) has to stop them, aided by his lovely, love-lorn assistant (Joey Wong, "A Chinese Ghost Story", "Green Snake") and a beautiful undercover secret agent (Chingmy Yau, "Naked Killer"). Though "City Hunter" is short on breathtaking stunts, there's plenty of well-choreographed hand-to-hand combat. Jackie Chan's lecherous, self-absorbed character (accompanied by a parade of girls into skimpy or skin-tight outfits) come across like a gleeful parody of James Bond (slightly marred by a bit of homophobia). All in all, a high energy romp. "--Bret Fetzer"

The master killer series and Dirty Ho to name 4. It is absolutely amazing if you compare it to the groundzero version. I didn't really like this movie much when I was a kid, but now that I get to watch a scratch free, beautiful print that is perfectly letterboxed, with english dubbed sound, it is defintely one of my favorite movies ever.

Come Drink With Me King HuRated: Writer: Yi Cheung, King Hu Date Added: 13 Feb 2007 Languages: Chinese Subtitles: English Comments: Da zui xia Summary: COME DRINK WITH ME (1966) was directed by King Hu whose fanciful Hong Kong/Taiwan costumed swordplay films from the 1960s and 70s are often cited as an inspiration for Ang Lee's hit of 2000, CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON. This film stars Cheng Pei Pei as female swordfighter Golden Swallow who fights on behalf of the local governor (her father) against a group of rebel bandits, led by Jade-Faced Tiger, who have kidnapped his son (her brother). She is aided in her adventures by a drunken wanderer called "Drunken Knight" (Yue Hua), who is equally good with a sword, and whose guise may be a cover for other activities. The storyline is not always the clearest to follow, but it does feature abundant scenes of action and swordplay and culminates in a lengthy battle between Drunken Knight and his former teacher, a renegade monk called in to subdue him.

Curse of the Golden Flower Yimou ZhangRated: R Writer: Yu Cao, Yimou Zhang Date Added: 21 Feb 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Unspeakable secrets are hidden within the Forbidden City. Summary: "Curse of the Golden Flower", a fictionalized historical glimpse into the brutally complicated politics of Emperor Ping's (Chow Yun Fat) reign during the Tang Dynasty, shows the viewer just how far a megalomaniac must go to gain and retain power in medieval China. Lavish sets, massive ceremonial displays, and perversely fascinating battle scenes impress similarly to the special effects Americans have come to love and expect from Chinese action films like Zhang Yimou's previous "House of Flying Daggers" and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". An intricate plot involving the Emperor's wife, Empress Phoenix (Gong Li) and their three sons, Crown Prince Xiang, Prince Jie, and Prince Cheng, most closely follows the Empress's secret plan to force abdication upon her corrupt husband as revenge for his slowly poisoning her with Black Fungus tea. Opening on the eve of the Chysanthemum Festival, 928 A.D., the Empress obsessively embroiders gold chysanthemums to adorn her army's uniforms while hatching plans with Jai to overthrow the Crown Prince for control of the throne. Meanwhile, a side plot develops as the Emperor's ex-wife and mother to Crown Prince Yu reemerges as Yu's lover. By the time the Festival occurs, family members are pitted against each other in a "King Lear"-ian web of lies that can only result in demise. The most sophisticated narrative aspect of "Curse of the Golden Flower" is that as the royal family crumbles, the Emperor's death grip on China remains unwavering. Gorgeous scenes set in the palace and costume design displaying China's upper class decadence cannot fail to entertain. The paradox between good and evil, here, is highlighted by how the Emperor successfully rules despite, and because of, his utter cruelty. "--Trinie Dalton"

The Defender Kazuya KonakaRated: R Writer: Gordon Chan, Kin Chung Chan Date Added: 26 Feb 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Dubbed Summary: Hong Kong martial arts master Jet Li plays a bodyguard from the Beijing secret police, sent to Hong Kong to protect a beautiful young witness to a mob killing, played by Christy Chung. Li turns her home into a high-security prison, complete with video cameras surveying every room, even her bedroom. Furious, Chung resists his efforts to protect her--until the threat to her life is made abundantly clear in a spectacular shopping mall shootout. As is natural under such circumstances, romance begins to bloom, much to the dismay of Chung's lawyer boyfriend, who hired Li in the first place. Made in the last few years before the British province of Hong Kong was returned to the rule of mainland China, "The Bodyguard from Beijing" makes many (possibly anxious) jokes about the differences between the austere Communist bodyguard and the lackadaisical H.K. police. Li's character is so consistently stone-faced that his usual boyish charm is repressed, and the movie emphasizes gunplay over acrobatic kung fu action, but there are still kicks galore and the usual Hong Kong combination of spectacular violence and outrageous sentimentality--all captured in stylish, glossy cinematography. And how often do you get to see venetian blinds used as an offensive weapon? "--Bret Fetzer"

Descendant Of Wing Chung Ha WongRated: Date Added: 26 Apr 2008 Sound: AAC Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Phu san Jahn sen shun Summary: As opposed to Michelle Yeoh's "Wing Chun", "The Descendant of Wing Chun" is a far more genuine (not to mention, wireless) display of the Wing Chun fighting style in all of its old-school glory (1978 release). It starts out with two fighters engaging in a "friendly" contest of martial skill and doesn't let up until the end credits. Great fights, authentic Wing Chun training techniques, and an interesting storyline make this a keeper. Note: for those of you that like Chinese dialogue and subtitles, this DVD has none, but the dub is very well done. The voice actor for Fatty Kwei is hilarious, english accent and all. Don't delay on this one, folks, it can't last at this almost absurd price. A definite gem.

Dragon Inn Hark TsuiRated: Unrated Writer: Cheung Tan, Hark Tsui Date Added: 28 Feb 2007 Languages: Chinese Subtitles: English Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Fans of Jet Li's 'Swordsman 2' will love it! Summary: The young director Raymond Lee ("Rebel from China") deserves some credit for daring to remake one of the great King Hu's most impressive movies. The 1967 original looked like a vintage Technicolor Western, and it had more sweep and panache than any other movie of its kind. Filming in Taiwan, Hu relished the possibilities offered by a shrewdly limited situation. The plots of the two versions are identical: Among the guests at a remote inn in dusty Northern China are representatives of the eunuch-controlled secret police that secretly runs the imperial Ming government, and a group of staunch rebels who have sworn to overthrow them. The story line could be described as an excuse for the sword fights, between as many combinations of antagonists as possible. But when the result was so intoxicating, who could complain? In 1992 Lee updated the basic conception with some winking sexual innuendo and snagged an all-star cast: Maggie Cheung Man-yuk ("Song of the Exile"), Tony Leung Kar-fei ("The Lover"), and Brigitte Lin Ching-hsia ("Peking Opera Blues"). But his staging of action feels mechanical, and the movie never comes to life. You may find yourself nodding out over the endless whirlwind swordplay. "--David Chute"

Duel Of The Iron Fist Cheh ChangRated: R Writer: Kang Chien Chiu Date Added: 01 Aug 2007 Sound: Dolby Comments: Watch the Most Incredible Karate Duel Ever Fought! Summary: For those not in the know, this was the second martial arts film shown in America (Yes, even before the late, great Bruce Lee's Golden Harvest classics became available). Being a Shaw Brothers movie directed by the greatest HK director ever, Chang Cheh, this film has its merits, but considering the talent behind it, it's somewhat disappointing in the choreography department. It has a decent story with good performances by Ti Lung & David Chiang, arresting visuals by Chang Cheh, glossy cinematography by Kung Mu-To, but what is up with the sloppy choreography by The Pops~Liu Chia-Liang?! Being an old-school fan who saw this on a rainy Saturday afternoon as a kid, I can be forgiving (to be fair, it does have an action-packed ending including a bamboo pole duel between David & Lung in the rain), but I do NOT recommend this for younger fans raised on Jackie Chan or Jet Li. If you're a fan of Shaw Brothers (like me) and/or Chang Cheh (like me), then you probably already saw this movie and can decide for yourself. If you're not familiar with the aforementioned names, then I suggest you check out some later Chang Cheh films he made with the Venoms. They never disappoint!

Eastern Condors Sammo Hung Kam-BoRated: R Writer: Barry Wong Date Added: 29 Sep 2007 Languages: Chinese Subtitles: English Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: A hugely entertaining, "Dirty Dozen"-style combat film about a group of Asian American ex-con GIs, dropped into postpullout Vietnam to destroy a cache of weapons the Yanks forgetfully left behind. ("Why are foreigners so stupid?" wonders a puzzled Chinese officer.) Director-star Sammo Hung slimmed down to play the tough-as-nails platoon commander and turned in a world-class action-star performance, charismatic and tightly focused. As a director Hung displays great sweep and inventiveness in the staging of action; there are combinations of martial arts stunt work and camera angles here that are like nothing you've ever seen before. The fighters practically leap into your lap. The movie is basically crisp hard-boiled entertainment, but it also gets into the tensions between the various Asian nationalities involved in the mission--native Chinese, Chinese American, Vietnamese, Cambodian--and into everybody's mixed feelings about the U.S. "--David Chute"

Enter the Dragon Robert ClouseRated: R Writer: Michael Allin Date Added: 27 Jan 2007 Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: The first American produced martial arts spectacular! Summary: The last film completed by Bruce Lee before his untimely death, "Enter the Dragon" was his entrée into Hollywood. The American-Hong Kong coproduction, shot in Asia by American director Robert Clouse, stars Lee as a British agent sent to infiltrate the criminal empire of bloodthirsty Asian crime lord Han (Shih Kien) through his annual international martial arts tournament. Lee spends his days taking on tournament combatants and nights breaking into the heavily guarded underground fortress, kicking the living tar out of anyone who stands in his way. The mix of kung fu fighting (choreographed by Lee himself) and James Bond intrigue (the plot has more than a passing resemblance to "Dr. No") is pulpy by any standard, but the generous budget and talented cast of world-class martial artists puts this film in a category well above Lee's primitive Hong Kong productions. Unfortunately he's off the screen for large chunks of time as American maverick competitors (and champion martial artists) John Saxon and Jim Kelly take center stage, but once the fighting starts Lee takes over. The tournament setting provides an ample display of martial arts mastery of many styles and climaxes with a huge free-for-all, but the highlight is Lee's brutal one-on-one with the claw-fisted Han in the dynamic hall-of-mirrors battle. Lee narrows his eyes and tenses into a wiry force of sinew, speed, and ruthless determination. "--Sean Axmaker"

Enter the Fat Dragon Sammo Hung Kam-BoRated: R Writer: Kuang Ni Date Added: 29 Dec 2008 Languages: Chinese Subtitles: English Sound: AAC Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Fei Lung gwoh gong Summary: Fans of Sammo Hung's TV series, "Martial Law", will enjoy "Enter the Fat Dragon", the second film Hung himself directed. He plays a young pig farmer who idolizes Bruce Lee and comes to Hong Kong to work in a food stall with his uncle. In no time at all he finds himself brawling with a crew of street toughs, whom he dispatches with dazzling skill--but unfortunately wrecking his uncle's stall at the same time. From there, the plot involves a millionaire art expert with three powerful bodyguards and a long-lost girlfriend, who just happens to be a waitress at the restaurant where Hung starts working as a dishwasher. But it doesn't matter if the story is nonsense--the point is the spectacular fight scenes and broad jokes. It's amazing to watch cheerful, roly-poly Hung whirl and kick with devastating speed; somehow his girth makes his skill all the more impressive. In one scene, Hung gets hired as an extra for a kung fu movie with a Bruce Lee imitator. Unsurprisingly, Hung is disappointed in the fake's abilities and teaches him--and the rest of the stunt crew--how it's done. The scene is not only a tremendous display of fighting prowess, it's also a charming depiction of a young man who clings with childlike wonder to his idols, and yearns to achieve the same glory. Perhaps it's a bit of a self-portrait. "--Bret Fetzer"

Fearless Ronny YuRated: PG-13 Writer: Chris Chow, Christine To Date Added: 07 Mar 2007 Languages: Cantonese Subtitles: English Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: "Mastering others is strength. Mastering yourself makes you fearless." - Lao Tzu Summary: A moving and inspiring story of redemption and personal triumph in the face of great odds, "Jet Li's Fearless" is the based-on-facts story of Chinese folk hero Huo Yuanjia (Jet Li). The son of a martial-arts master whose greatest strength was his restraint, Huo grows into an unbeatable fighter whose pride and thoughtlessness lead to a chain of tragic losses. After a classic wanderer-in-the-wilderness penance, Huo reinvents himself as a mature instructor of Wushu, a martial arts system that embraces all forms of fighting without preference or pre-judgement. He also becomes a populist symbol, at the dawn of the 20th century, of China's refusal to entirely capitulate to the boot of Western colonialists. Taking on whatever European, American, or Japanese fighter the outsiders bring in to demoralize the natives, Huo becomes a legend that, in real life, is still revered. Thrillingly directed by Ronny Yu ("Warriors of Virtue"), "Jet Li's Fearless" is a dazzling action movie that transcends its breathless fight sequences with Huo's sportsmanship virtues, i.e., knowing when you've won by example, rather than by the fist. Jet Li is superb in the role. "--Tom Keogh"

Fight Back to School Gordon ChanRated: Unrated Writer: Gordon Chan, Barry Wong, Jing Wong Date Added: 21 Oct 2007 Languages: Cantonese Subtitles: English Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: Stephen Chow stars as a police officer who goes undercover at the Edinburg College to recover the Chief Inspector's gun. While the story may not seem like the greatest, Chow's brilliant comedy is on full dispay and the movie is very well directed by Gordan Chan. After seeing this, I can't think of a better story than Stephen Chow being in school acting as an 18 year old. It works better than you could ever imagine, mainly because this isn't you typical Wong Jing type of movie, though he did help to write the script and also produced the movie. The great acting and directing combined with the comedy is what makes this so great. Not just for fans of Hong Kong Cinema, it's for anyone who likes to laugh. I fell out of my chair a few times. Chow is never really looking for the gun so the plot kind of drags, but it's still a lot of fun, and the story comes together by the end.

Flaming Brothers Tung Cho 'Joe' CheungRated: Unrated Writer: Kar Wai Wong Date Added: 08 Mar 2007 Languages: Chinese Subtitles: English Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: This movie really is about two gay "brothers." Not biological brothers of course. The Chinese use the term brother to mean a good friend in a lot of movies. The movie starts with Chow Yun-fat's character stealing rice and then a girl in the orphange catches him and tells him never to steal again. Well, the girl leaves and little chow turns into a criminal. Chow yun's "brother" get's into trouble when he kills a rival gang bosses brother. the boss sends him on a mission and then doesn' want to pay up when he completes it. in the meantime both of the "brothers" find love. yun-fat finds the girl of his child hood and alan tang's character falls in love with a singer. when they return chow yun-fat wants to go straight and moves to hong kong to run a convenience store. when their good friend's son is killed, yun-fat must return to help his "brother" fight the rival boss. I couldn't really tell if this movie was a parody on John Woo's use of homosexual undertones or if it was a genuine movie about two men who loved each other more than their respective female parteners. you make the call. this movie is really violent and interesting. worth watching.

The Flying Guillotine Meng Hua HoRated: Unrated Writer: Raymond Lui, Hsu Shen Yu Date Added: 08 Mar 2007 Summary: It's a shame that these classic Martial Arts films are not given a more appropriate presentation. This film is one of the best of the Shaw Brothers Classic Action flicks. It started a series with Master of the Flying Guillotine coming soon after. It's true that this Hong Kong franchise was just another shameless money-making enterprise, but it's influence on mainstream American filmmaking cannot be denied. Culturally, these films carried an impressive blend of folktale and proletarian values that are very near to the Chinese way of thinking. The bloody revenge seeking working-class heroes personified a kind of wish-fulfilment on the part of the Hong Kong movie-goer. With the British controlling the Chinese Port it became a characteristic of the populace to want to see Justice doled out aginst the odds. What better weapon to fight the Industrialisation of the European infestation but the ancient Martial Arts. A weapon from distant, traditional, near mythic times fed nostalgia and fueled the desires of a movie-going public that wanted to excorcise the bloodied changes brought about by the Hybrid British Colonisers by reflecting it in their forms of entertainment. One of those weapons is THE FLYING GUILLOTINE!!!!!!!

Gen-X Cops Benny ChanRated: R Writer: Benny Chan, Koan Hui, Anna Lee, Bey Logan Date Added: 23 Sep 2007 Languages: Cantonese Subtitles: English Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: My rip Summary: This is what "The Mod Squad" wanted to be. Chan (Eric Tsang), a cop on the fringe of the force, assembles a team of loose-cannon cadets--the "Gen-X Cops"--to infiltrate the mobs of Hong Kong, and they find a stolen shipment of explosive rocket fuel. Dressed in skin-tight leather and vinyl, hip to the point of being ridiculous, our heroes (named Jack, Alien, and Match) have to fight not only ultraviolent criminals but also hostile factions within the police as they track down a supercool Japanese gangster with no fear of death. The clichés fly fast and thick, and the plot is at times incomprehensible, but the action is pretty much nonstop. A shootout in a surfboard factory is particularly spectacular but is only one of several rapidly edited, stunt-filled sequences. The dubbing is better than usual (though subtitles would still be preferable), and there's some unfortunate homophobia, but the actors are all good-looking, the rock soundtrack is loud, the colors are bright, and the attitude is intense. "Gen-X Cops" even features a cameo by Jackie Chan, who's somehow involved with presenting the film. A slick, silly, and very entertaining movie. "--Bret Fetzer"

High Risk Jing WongRated: R Writer: Jing Wong Date Added: 04 Oct 2007 Languages: Chinese Subtitles: English Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Letterbox Comments: He Redefines Revenge Summary: When a military officer (Jet Li of "Romeo Is Bleeding" and "Fist of Legend") miscalculates and causes the explosive death of dozens of children on a school bus--something you'll never see in an American movie!--he leaves his position to become a bodyguard for an egomaniacal movie star named Frankie (Jacky Cheung from "Bullet in the Head" and "A Chinese Ghost Story 2", doing a satirical parody of Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee). The star claims to do all his own stunts, but in fact Li has become his stunt double. An investigative reporter (Chingmy Yau, "Naked Killer") catches them switching places and decides to do an exposé. From this point on, "Meltdown" (also known as "High Risk") turns into a Hong Kong version of "Die Hard", with terrorists taking over a skyscraper in order to steal valuable jewels, as well as a couple of young lovers, a villainous kung fu master who wants to challenge Frankie, and a hip-hop soundtrack. "Meltdown" is a delirious romp, crammed with as much low comedy and high-powered action as three Hollywood flicks. Despite (or partly because of) some clumsy special effects, logical absurdities, and cheesy plot developments, the movie is hugely entertaining, and Jet Li is in fine charismatic form. However, be warned: though the movie's tone is light, there's some extremely graphic violence. "--Bret Fetzer"

House of Flying Daggers Yimou ZhangRated: PG-13 Writer: Feng Li, Bin Wang, Yimou Zhang Date Added: 21 Mar 2007 Languages: Cantonese Subtitles: English Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: No one uses color like Chinese director Zhang Yimou--movies like "Raise the Red Lantern" or "Hero", though different in tone and subject matter, are drenched in rich, luscious shades of red, blue, yellow, and green. "House of Flying Daggers" is no exception; if they weren't choreographed with such vigorous imagination, the spectacular action sequences would seem little more than an excuse for vivid hues rippling across the screen. Government officers Leo and Jin (Asian superstars Andy Lau and Takeshi Kaneshiro) set out to destroy an underground rebellion called the House of Flying Daggers (named for their weapon of choice, a curved blade that swoops through the air like a boomerang). Their only chance to find the rebels is a blind women named Mei (Ziyi Zhang, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon") who has some lethal kung fu moves of her own. In the guise of an aspiring rebel, Jin escorts Mei through gorgeous forests and fields that become bloody battlegrounds as soldiers try to kill them both. While arrows and spears of bamboo fly through the air, Mei, Jin, and Leo turn against each other in surprising ways, driven by passion and honor. Zhang's previous action/art film, "Hero", sometimes sacrificed momentum for sheer visual beauty; "House of Flying Daggers" finds a more muscular balance of aesthetic splendor and dazzling swordplay. Iron Monkey Woo-ping YuenRated: PG-13 Writer: Tai-Muk Lau, Cheung Tan Date Added: 27 Jan 2007 Languages: Chinese Subtitles: English Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Sometimes the only way to become a hero is to be an outlaw Summary: Since the late 1800s, the real-life Cantonese patriot Wong Fei-hung has evolved into an icon of Chinese pop culture, a sort of Asian Davy Crockett. He's been a central figure in Hong Kong cinema since the 1950s, most recently in Tsui Hark 's "Once Upon a Time in China" series. In this thrilling 1993 adventure directed by Yuen Woo-ping, we meet Wong as an earnest boy traveling with his upright pugilist father (Donnie Yen) and drawing inspiration from the activities of the benevolent masked bandit known as the Iron Monkey (Yu Rong-guang). The sheer physical prowess of the stars is often flabbergasting, and the action set pieces (especially an interlude atop a set of "Chinese poles") are staged for maximum dynamism. In effect, this is a powerful combination of the older, Baltic style of kung fu action and the newer body-slamming style pioneered by Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung. This is a perfect martial arts picture to screen for any genre skeptics in your midst. "--David Chute"

Jet Li's The Enforcer Corey YuenRated: R Writer: Sandy Shaw, Jing Wong Date Added: 30 Mar 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: With Hero Summary: The amazing Jet Li plays a cop whose job keeps him from attending his son's junior kung fu competitions. When sent undercover to infiltrate the gang of a brutal mob boss, his arrest--part of his cover story--exposes his son to humiliation in school. Meanwhile, his wife falls deeper into illness. "The Enforcer" is a classic Hong Kong blend of dazzling kung fu action and outrageously sentimental subplots. Yet as silly as some situations may seem (and let's be honest, they aren't any more ridiculous than your average Sly Stallone or Arnold Schwarzenegger movie), they're never boring, and when the spectacular fights begin it doesn't matter--Jet Li's stunning skill and natural charisma make him magnetic. Anita Mui, costarring as a police detective tracking Li down, gets to do her share of fighting as well. In the finale, father and son team up for a battle as funny as it is spectacular. If you only know Jet Li from "Lethal Weapon 4", you owe it to yourself to check out his authentic Hong Kong work, where the stunts are jaw-dropping and the special effects, while not always perfectly realistic, are bursts of pure imagination. When she stretches during one training scene, you gotta pay attention. The bad part of this dvd is that the master used was already in bad shape. It really just looks like an old vhs copy that's been degrading over the years. And the dubbing...as usual, is quite bad. Can't anyone ever make a decent voice dub over?
