Beach of the War Gods Raymond Chow Man WaiRated: Writer: Yu Wang Date Added: 27 Jan 2007 Subtitles: ENDsubtitles-->Sound: Dolby Summary: The Chinese protagonists in Wang Yu's 1972 epic action picture, a prime specimen of mainstream Hong Kong action cinema, all wear peraly white during the final sea-front battle sequence, while their Japanese pirate foes wear inky black. That's proof positive that actor-director Wang (a staple Shaw Brothers star to the 1960s) is a staunch swordplay traditionalist. The style, the pace, and even the music may recall Akira Kurosawa, but here the Japanese are as purely evil as the Nazis in a WWII flick. Wang's stalwart Hisao Feng is a wandering swordsman (complete with his very own fuzz-tone guitar theme) who returns home to discover a pirate threat to his coastal village. He assembles an assortment of warriors, guys with handles like Spearman Li and Lightning Fist Hung; even a taciturn knife thrower who as to be badgered into helping out, like Jamese Coburn in the The Magnficient Seven. Hsiao and his pals then train the peasant villagers to fend off the Japanese Menace. The last 20 minutes of the movie are nothing but bloody sword fighting; Hsiao kills the Japanese commander (who spouts blood majestically, like Tatsuya Nakadai in Kurosawa's Sanjuro) and then keels over himself, a photogenic martyr to the anti-Japanese cause.

Beggar of No EqualRated: NR Date Added: 07 Nov 2007 Sound: Dolby Summary: I've read bad things about Videoasia brand releases before, but took a chance on this one. It's completely unwatchable. There is obviously a manufacturing quality problem here. Perhaps Videoasia tried to encrypt this and just ruined it, or else it's just a crappy bootleg burned so badly it won't play right much past the menu. Either way, I would never willingly choose Videoasia products over any other distributor's again. 1 star is really too much for a product that is essentially worthless due to extremely poor quality manufacture.

A Better Tomorrow John WooRated: R Writer: Hing-Ka Chan, Suk-Wah Leung, John Woo Date Added: 19 Oct 2007 Languages: Cantonese, English Subtitles: English Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: The movie that began it all......... Summary: The John Woo gangster classic that started it all, a romantic, violent, swirlingly stylish melodrama about dueling brothers--with a mesmerizing lead performance by Hong Kong's favorite actor, Chow Yun-Fat. In repose, Chow's sleepy magnetism recalls the glory days of Robert Mitchum, Steve McQueen, and Takakura Ken; when he's stepping high, Chow has a unique, ebullient star presence, a man who embraces life so unselfconsciously that he becomes vulnerable to all kinds of suffering and heartache (he endures masochistic megadoses of violence here). The sequence in which Chow's Mark avenges his betrayed best friend---by blasting his way into, and then out of, a Chinese restaurant, twin .45s blazing---is a swashbuckling standout. Woo's film technique may have been more polished in later efforts, but "Tomorrow" has a direct emotional power that is still unique. Kung fu star of the 1970s, Ti Lung is also terrific here as the 40ish established mobster, relied upon by all, who allows conflicting loyalties toward Mark and toward his younger brother, now a cop, to undermine the stability of his position. Black Mask Daniel LeeRated: R Writer: Teddy Chan, Ann Hui Date Added: 07 Feb 2007 Languages: English Subtitles: English Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: Take the art direction and set design from "The Crow" and "Batman". Add a male-bonding element reminiscent of "The Killer" or "Hard-Boiled". Stir in a plot line about some top-secret near-invincible bionic-man superwarriors taking over the drug trade in Hong Kong, with only one man who can stop them. Season with a high body count, lots of explosions and running gun battles, and spectacular hand-to-hand fight sequences. Top off with a soupçon of cheesy comic relief and a generous helping of atrocious dubbing. Bake for too long, then remove from oven and allow to cool until thoroughly stale. The result: "Black Mask". Sure, it's a preposterous recipe (bet you didn't know that LED readouts will show up on an X-ray), but it's stylishly prepared and presented, with high-octane editing, wild camera angles, and a neo-Goth feel all around. Of course it's all about the remarkable Jet Li, the fight scenes, and the postindustrial art direction. Those who come expecting a high-concept, intelligent thriller will be left with indigestion, but Hong Kong action fans who live and die for insane stunts and head-spinning martial arts scenes will have their appetites sated by this dish. It's very interesting to see the influence that John Woo's hand continues to have on American and HK action thrillers, years after his seminal films with Chow Yun-fat. It'll be even more interesting to see how films like "Black Mask" hold up in the future. Just don't take it too seriously and this movie works just fine. Oh, and the title? It comes from when Jet Li switches from his mild-mannered librarian persona to butt-kicking superhero, complete with mask and hat à la "The Green Hornet"'s Cato. "--Jerry Renshaw"

Bullet in the Head John WooRated: NR Writer: Janet Chun, Patrick Leung Date Added: 08 Feb 2007 Languages: Cantonese, Mandarin Chinese Subtitles: English, Japanese, Korean, Spanish Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 Picture Format: Letterbox Summary: The 1990 film "Bullet in the Head" engages at every turn. At once a political epic, a story about childhood friends and loyalty, as well as a tale of corruption and war, John Woo's action-packed face-off contrasts '60s idealism--the Beatles and Elvis--against the shifting tide in the East. It's plain that Woo has pulled his trio of heroes straight from Sergio Leone's "Once Upon a Time in America" as well as Michael Cimino's "The Deer Hunter", but there are bits of Nicholas Ray's "Rebel Without a Cause" tossed in for good measure. The old Chinese way of life is fading in the face of the emergent Vietnam War and Chairman Mao's Red Army, and Hong Kong struggles under archaic British rule. Three friends--Ben (Tony Leung), Frank (Jacky Cheung), and Paul (Waise Lee)--rub up against gang warfare, capitalism, and opportunism in a life that is strongly tinged by Western culture. Ben falls in love and wants to marry Jane (Fennie Yuen). Frank has borrowed money from a warlord to pay for his pal's bridal bash but a rival group, led by Ringo and his thugs, are hell-bent on keeping loose-cannon Frank from keeping his promise. The boys kill Ringo in a face-off and the cops come looking for them, separating Ben and Jane. The trio escapes to exploited luck-of-the-draw Saigon to make their fortunes. Luck, however, isn't with them. In a violent, balletic dance to honor, greed, and a teenage pledge that is challenged with adulthood, "Bullet in the Head" is sentimental despite its exquisitely choreographed blood bath; it's steeped in the kind of code-of-ethics morality that has been the glue of buddy films since the beginning of cinematic time. "Bullet in the Head" is a tale of love and betrayal played out against a backdrop of wartime chaos, and while Woo had made other vital and vibrant movies--"The Killer", "Hard Boiled", and "A Better Tomorrow"--none were as impassioned as "Bullet in the Head". That it retains its innocence at all is a tribute to this Hong Kong action auteur, who brands his movies with visual flair as well as a palette splattered with blood. "--Paula Nechak"

Summary: Before Bruce Lee became a superstar and before the kung fu movie genre exploded into a phenomenon, there was one-time swimming ace Jimmy Wang Yu, Shaw Brothers’ first “million dollar” star who helped to revitalize the swordplay genre by starring in Cheng Cheh’s ONE-ARMED SWORDSMAN. Three years later and with only a handful of movies under his belt, Wang Yu stepped out from the shadow of his mentor Chang Cheh to write, direct and star in the one movie that sparked Hong Kong’s kung fu movie boom in the ’70s. Wang Yu is a principled kung fu student who finds his world thrown asunder when a rival of his master returns with three Japanese karate masters (led by Lo Lieh) who possess no respect for life. They mercilessly kill or maim everyone in the school and leave Wang Yu wounded, in hiding and hungry for revenge. Unable to best their karate skills, Wang Yu recalls his master’s advice and begins training in the only known method of countering karate (within the movie that is), a combination of iron palm and light step kung fu. When the Japanese and their Chinese pal set up a crooked gambling hall and protection racket, Wang Yu dons a surgical mask and begins performing operations on baddies with his iron fists. Shuriken-tossing kendo experts are called in and Wang Yu battles his way through them and on to a showdown with the Japanese karate masters. --Mark Pollard, KungFuCinema.com
