Summary: This Jack Black vehicle seems, on the surface, like a perfect fit for the actor: an opportunity to showcase Black's unique style with the extreme facial gestures and exuberant physicality that have become his forte. Black plays Ignacio, a lowly cook in a monastery in central Mexico who feeds orphans by day, and wrestles in the town square at night. Ignacio teams up with Esqueleto (Hector Jimenez), a street urchin who tormented him, to form a tag-team duo that goes up against the strangest wrestlers Mexico has to offer. Besides doing it for money to feed the orphans, Ignacio is also fighting to win the forbidden affections of Sister Encarnacion (Ana de la Reguera) with predictable difficulty. While the movie has likeable characters and the plot is enjoyable enough, it can't overcome its plodding pace and formulaic structure enough to keep the movie interesting throughout. Jack Black is a very strong comedic actor, and the wrestling scenes offer plenty of chances for slapstick, physical comedy, but watching him run around in red briefs and blue tights amounts to half the laughs in the movie, and there's just not enough here for him to really work with. When he plays a more well-formed character, as in School of Rock and High Fidelity, his strengths really show. But in "Nacho Libre" he's saddled with a caricature. Weighed down by too much low-brow humor and a script that goes nowhere, "Nacho Libre" just can't make full enough use of Black's talents to overcome the obstacles. "--Daniel Vancini"

Summary: In the Pacific during World War 2, the officers live a comfortable life with good food, good drink and good quarters. To them, war is a game which they know they will win and the common soldiers are the pawns on the board. When the campaign slows down, the Commander sends a squad to the top of a mountain behind enemy lines to report on the Japanese troop movements. The squad is commanded by a tough cynical Sergeant who takes no prisoners and even takes the gold from the teeth of the enemy dead. Before the mission starts, the lieutenant, who has had a cushy job due to a life of wealth and privilege, criticizes the Commander over his attitude towards the common soldier and is re-assigned to lead the squad. The veteran Sergeant wants to complete this mission as ordered, and he will do everything he can do to see that it is successful.

Summary: There actually is no naked killer in "Naked Killer", but that's about all this mad, adults-only comic book action roller coaster is missing. Flirty, feral Chingmy Yau gives an abusive jerk an impromptu vasectomy in front of cop Simon Yam, an impotent detective who vomits whenever he draws his gun. He's tracking a series of sex murders where all the male victims are missing their private organs when he falls in love with chief suspect Chingmy. She's subsequently recruited by the real killer, a hit woman who targets rapists at large and practices on drooling sex-mad psychos chained up in the attic. When they finally head out for the real thing, they take out victims in a display of midair somersaults, cracking whips, flying ropes, and flashing guns. This kind of foreplay attracts the lustful attentions of rival assassin Carrie Ng, a lesbian killer ready to abandon her purring sex kitten for the savage Chingmy. This is one of the most energetically gonzo Hong Kong logic bombs ever made, a crazy melodrama that revels in absurd extravagance, sick humor (you may never eat link sausage again), and pure adrenaline-driven displays of gymnastic action and orgiastic gunplay. Summary: Three North Shaolin teachers (Lu Feng, Chang Sheng, and Sun Chien) are called on by the Manchus to teach their soldiers and are urged to challenge the current South Shaolin teachers. They defeat the South Shaolin teachers and, that night, the head general (Wang Lung Wei) kills the South Shaolin teachers and blames their death on the North Shaolin teachers. The South Shaolin master sends more of his pupils, who are killed accidentally by the North Shaolin teachers. However, the price for not passing a level is madness or even death! In order to uncover the game's secret, as well as her friends' fates, Rain agrees to join the game. Suddenly, she finds herself in a dark and fantastic world, surrounded by demons and otherworldly creatures, with only her wits and her surprisingly handy mobile phone to point the way home.



The original fiction for Naraka 19 has attained quite a following online, resulting in some concerns from fans about how the film version would turn out. Allaying those fears is director Carol Lai, who follows up her last horror film, the under-appreciated The Third Eye with this new effort, utilizing state-of-the-art CG effects to render the fantastic levels of Hell visited by Rain and her roommates. The effects resemble those from the Pang Brothers hit Re-cycle, with hidden psychological pains bringing grisly imagery and the threat of violence to each character's individual Hell. Backing Gillian Chung is a promising cast, including Patrick Tam (Beast Cops), Shaun Tam (Star Runner), Yan Ng (Whispers and Moans), new EEG singer Vincy, models Maggie Li and Bonnie Xian, and finally Gillian Chung's Twin partner, Charlene Choi, in a very special cameo.

Summary: Oliver Stone would like to have the last word on America's media culture of voyeurism and violence, but whatever he's trying to say in this grisly, unconventional movie comes across terribly garbled. Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis play traveling serial killers who become television celebrities when a Geraldo-like personality (Robert Downey Jr.) turns their madness into the biggest story in the country. Stone extensively rewrote an original script by Quentin Tarantino, and he employs a mosaic of different film stocks, video, and pop pastiches to create a sense of blurred lines between visual phenomena. (The background on Lewis's character's life as an abused child, for instance, is presented as a sitcom starring Rodney Dangerfield.) But the result of these experiments is a pompous, even amateurish effort at grasping the reins of a real-life national debate. One almost wants to tell Stone to sit down and raise his hand next time if he thinks he has something to say. The controversial director would like "Natural Born Killers" to be nothing less than a monumental achievement, but it's one of the emptier entries in his filmography. "--Tom Keogh"

Summary: The word "vampire" is never mentioned in "Near Dark", but that doesn't stop this 1987 cult favorite from being one of the best modern-era vampire films. It put then-unknown director Kathryn Bigelow on Hollywood's radar and gave choice roles to "Aliens" costars favored by Bigelow's ex-husband James Cameron: Lance Henriksen is the leader of a makeshift family of renegade bloodsuckers, nocturnally seeking victims in rural Oklahoma; his immortal gal pal is "Aliens" and "Terminator 2" alumnus Jenette Goldstein; and Bill Paxton is the group's deadliest leather-clad ass kicker. Fellow traveler Jenny Wright lures Okie farm boy Adrian Pasdar into the group with a love bite, and he's soon turning toward vampirism with a combination of frightened revulsion and relentless desire. With Joshua Miller ("River's Edge") as the youngest vampire, "Near Dark" is Bigelow's masterpiece of low-budget ingenuity--a truck-stop thriller that begins well, gets better and better (aided by a fine Tangerine Dream score), and goes out in a blaze of glory. Summary: Look there are some very good sports movies out there and most of them are so serious that they are boring. This is one of those sports movies in the vein of MAJOR LEAGUE or THE REPLACEMENTS that when it shows up on tv, you can't help but watch it. Now I am from Texas so this movie takes on special meaning to me and that makes it funnier. Heck sit back and root for this bunch of loveable loosers. Enjoy the comic slam at the college administrators. Scott Bakula is an under appreciated comic actor and Sinbad is a hoot. So just watch it and "PARTAY!"

Comments: A tale of weird love.

Summary: I'm not sure about the "Not available Yet" tag on this item - it certainly IS out. I own it. In fact, I was logging on hoping to sell it!

That being said, the movie is exactly as advertised - Ed Wood soft porn. You know you're on familiar territory when the "actors" begin our little romp with references to Bela Legosi.

Is there a plot worth reviewing in a movie like this? Well... is there EVER in an Ed Wood film? You don't watch a movie like this for the quality, the acting, the writing or... *Especially* the porn. You watch it because Ed is so lovingly bad, and so thoroughly consistant, it's like spending time with an old, slightly insane friend. All the standard props are here - undead, slightly dead, mostly dead (and an almost erotic lesbian scene). But in the end one star is all it gets, and is probably more than it deserves. Which would probably thrill Ed. "One star? GREAT! I'll get 1 1/2 next time!" Gotta love Ed.
