Comments: Cabin Fever... catch it.

Summary: A sneaky and surprisingly smart horror flick, "Cabin Fever" sets up all the cliches of its particular subgenre (what might be called the "sexy young people go into the woods" horror movie, featuring hostile redneck locals, dead animals on hooks, cars that suddenly stop running, etc.) and by the end has played a clever twist on every standard element, often to darkly comic effect. What's the plot? Well, five sexy young people (Rider Strong, Jordan Ladd, Joey Kern, Cerina Vincent, and James DeBello) go to an isolated cabin where they contract a nasty bacteria that eats their flesh; this, combined with a bad-tempered dog and a party-loving police deputy (Giuseppe Andrews, giving a particularly funny performance), leads everyone into confusion and bloody chaos. Investigating on his own, Francis seemingly discovers that Caligari has been ordering the somnambulist to commit the murders, but the story eventually takes a more surprising direction.

Summary: The rise and fall of the notorious Roman Emperor Caligula, showing the violent methods that he employs to gain the throne, and the subsequent insanity of his reign - he gives his horse political office and humiliates and executes anyone who even slightly displeases him. He also sleeps with his sister, organises elaborate orgies and embarks on a fruitless invasion of England before meeting an appropriate end. There are various versions of the film, ranging from the heavily- truncated 90-minute version to the legendary 160-minute hardcore version which leaves nothing to the imagination (though the hardcore scenes were inserted later and do not involve the main cast members).

Summary: I guess I'm one of the odd few who found this movie enjoyable. Yes, it's definitely a thriller not a horror movie as so many others have pointed out, but don't let that disappoint you. Dario Argento comes up with his usual cast of odd characters, who all have their dark sides to them that aren't immediately shown.
The poker games between the killer and the police do tend to be drawn out, showing every hand and every card turn, but that's just an attempt to add to the suspense. The victim can be seen and heard, right down to their agonized screams as the killer makes good on his promise to cut a piece of them off for every hand the police lose and then killing the victim if the police lose the game.
The gore factor is minimal, which is surprising for an Argento film, but there are some true moments of suspense, such as the break in on Anna's, the main character, apartment, that keep the movie going.
I would definitely recommend this movie to Argento fans as well as those who like a good thriller.

Summary: Al Pacino cuts a noble figure in this very enjoyable drama by director Brian De Palma ("Scarface"), based on a pair of books by Edwin Torres. Pacino plays a Puerto Rican ex-con trying hard to go straight, but his loyalty to his lowlife attorney (a virtually unrecognizable Sean Penn) and enemies on the street make that choice difficult. Penelope Ann Miller plays, somewhat unlikely, a stripper who has a romance with Pacino's character. The film finds De Palma tempering his more outlandish moves (think of "Body Double" or "Snake Eyes") just as he did with the popular "Untouchables" and "Mission: Impossible". But while "Carlito's Way" was not commercially successful and never rises to the level of greatness, it is a genuinely compelling movie graced with a fine performance by Pacino and a surprising one from Penn. Summary: This edition is not the 10th Anniversary Edition, this is the "Special Edition", the difference being that this is a) cheaper b) not a flipper c) misses out on a bunch of all the documentary little features that are on the other one. I was surprised, it never happened to me but after I read some reviews I wondered where all the extras are. Well turns out I bought this edition instead of the 10th Anniversary Edition... Well, they just dropped a few things and sell it for a few dollars less.

One of my all time favorite movies nonetheless, I'll just trade it in for the other edition at some point.

Summary: Long before "Unforgiven" deconstructed the Western, or "Blazing Saddles" lampooned it, "Cat Ballou" poked the genre in the eye. An altogether enjoyable comedy, the film is full of small surprises, big laughs, and wonderful character turns. Catherine Ballou (Jane Fonda) is a schoolteacher until a hired thug kills her daddy. To protect what she loves, she collects two petty criminals, a wisecracking hired hand, and a hired killer, Kid Shelleen (Lee Marvin). Unfortunately, Shelleen is a raging drunk who is so inebriated and unsteady with a gun he literally misses the broad side of a barn. However, Cat, has, as they used to say in those days, a mind of her own, and she masterminds a spectacular train heist that puts them all on the lam. Marvin won an Academy Award for his role as the derelict Shelleen, and his performances (he actually has two) are still topnotch and on target. The framing device, two wandering minstrels, played by Stubby Kaye and Nat "King" Cole, are the maraschino cherries on the top of this Wild West confection. "--Keith Simanton"

Summary: Joseph Heller's novel was one of the seminal literary events of the 1960s, but Mike Nichols's film ultimately proved too literal in its attempt to bring Heller's fragmented fiction to the screen. Still, Nichols, who made this on the heels of "The Graduate", seemed the ideal candidate to tackle this Buck Henry adaptation. The story deals with bomber pilot Yossarian (Alan Arkin), who has flown enough missions to get out of World War II but can't because the number of missions needed for discharge keeps getting raised. The satire and absurdity of Heller's book get lost in Nichols's effort to give screen time to the members of his all-star cast, which includes Orson Welles, Jon Voight, Bob Newhart, Anthony Perkins, Richard Benjamin, and Martin Sheen, among others. While interesting enough to hold the viewer's attention, the mystery of "The Caveman's Valentine" is a distant third to Jackson's performance and the film's sumptuous visuals. The film is gorgeously shot, and lights and abstract images are effectively used to show Romulus's beautiful but tormented inner world. While the plot does take a silly leap of logic or two, Romulus's illness and the strain it puts on his family are sensitively and realistically handled. His all-too-real run-ins with his policewoman daughter are nicely contrasted with his visions of his ex-wife, who serves as a combination of Greek chorus and muse. If one is willing to suspend a little disbelief here and there, this picture is well worth a look. "--Ali Davis"

Summary: Comedian Chris Rock is the leader of a middle-class rap act that wins fame and fortune after donning a prison persona. The title stands for Cell Block 4. Naturally, they are mistaken for the real thing by everyone but the incarcerated gangstas, who are none too happy at the theft of their identities. One of the better efforts from "Saturday Night Live" alumni, this "rapumentary" is a hip-hop hit. However, it is not up to the cutting humor of that granddaddy of all spoofs, "This Is Spinal Tap?", as misogyny and meanness get in the way. It has an anything-goes mentality, so expect outrageously filthy lyrics and plenty of tasteless humor. Of note: Director Tamra Davis was also behind that wild 1992 road movie, "Guncrazy". Summary: Clint Eastwood’s mastery as a director, established over the past decade and a half with Unforgiven, Million Dollar Baby, Letters from Iwo Jima, and others, continues with Changeling, a 2008 offering based on a shocking but all-too-true story about child abduction and police corruption in 1920s Los Angeles. Single mother Christine Collins (Angelina Jolie, excellent in a role with somewhat limited parameters) finds her 9-year-old son, Walter, missing when she returns home from work one day. She files a report with the Los Angeles Police Department, an outfit that was wildly unpopular at the time (in his regular radio broadcast, a crusading pastor played by John Malkovich decries the force as "violent and corrupt," adding that "our protectors are our brutalizers"). When a child roughly matching Walter’s description turns up in Illinois five months later, the LAPD, intent on salvaging its tattered reputation, is only too eager to claim that he is Collins’ missing child. Little matters that he’s three inches shorter, is circumcised (Walter wasn’t), and fails to pass muster with Walter’s dentist, schoolteacher, and others; the cops, in particular the odious Captain J.J. Jones (Jeffrey Donovan), insist that the mistake is Christine’s, not theirs. What follows is almost too nightmarish to believe--except that it actually happened. Exasperated by Collins’ continued claim that "Walter" is a fraud, they trot out a doctor to reinforce the bogus ID, declare her unfit as a mother, and finally have her committed to a local psychopathic ward. Through it all, Collins, bolstered by the pastor and thousands of outraged Angelenos, refuses to sign a document that would exonerate the police for their egregious error. As for Walter, it’s only when the LAPD’s seemingly only honest detective (Michael Kelly) takes matters into his own hands that the grisly mystery of the child’s fate begins to be solved. That would have been a good place for the film to conclude, too. Unfortunately, it goes on for more than another half hour, with innumerable false endings that add nothing to the story and could just as easily have been summarized with a few sentences before the final credits. That flaw aside (and it’s a major one), Changeling is a powerful film, with a realistic period feel, a wonderfully muted vibe and color palette, and an understated score by Eastwood himself. --Sam Graham

Summary: What's scarier than scary kids? "Village of the Damned" is the definitive scary-kid classic, a truly unsettling film drawn from John Wyndham's novel "The Midwich Cuckoos". The brilliant opening sequence depicts the sudden and temporary paralysis of a small English hamlet, which is followed by the town's women becoming mysteriously pregnant. The spawn of this occurrence are a dozen eerie, blond-headed children, who are either gifted, evil, or "the world's new people." A splendid outing, not least in the way it catches parental anxiety about this small new stranger in one's home. (It was remade by John Carpenter in 1995.)
"Children of the Damned" follows up with a story about six more creepy kids, brought from all over the globe to huddle in a old church in London. An excellent opening half-hour gets bogged down in the movie's global-political ambitions (it's very much a cold war offering), but it has its share of shivery moments--the sight of the six youngsters striding down a London street as though they controlled the world is a chiller. But where's the blond hair? The two films are different in tone; "Village" feels like a fifties sci-fi offering, with an old-school star (George Sanders) and classical style; "Children" is a film of the sixties, with hipper techniques, urban setting, and young actors Ian Hendry and Alan Badel. Summary: This movie packs an emotional punch. The tripped-out, drug-amped characters -portrayed by Jason Allen Wolfe, Eli DeGeer, and Amanda Booth - are entangled in a web of deceit and sexual enslavement. The story is represented beautifully with a mix of sexual and horrifying visuals coupled with well-acted roles that embody the downward spiral of drug and sex addictions. The directing combination of low-budget movie veteran Eric Stanze (SAVAGE HARVEST, ICE FROM THE SUN, SCRAPBOOK) and relative newcomer Robin Garrels (INSANIAC) lends to a new look for independent movies. The music score used, also adds to the whole experience, helping to immerse you in this twisted maze of a story. I have watched this movie several times and it holds up each time I watch it. I highly recommend this movie.

Summary: I've seen Chinese Odyssey many times, because its just so funny! Chinese Odyssey is not really a remake of the Chinese classic, Journey to the West, but itýýs more of a parody, or a side story based on the Monkey King.

The second part starts off with Monkey King (Stephen Chow) who is now 500 years back in the past due to a malfunction of Pandoraýýs Box. Here, he meets with Fairy Zixia (Athena Chu) and got involved romantically with her, although initially, he wasn't too fond of her. Itýýs also as funny as part one, and Wukongýýs super long-winded and naggy master, Tripitika (Law Kar-Ying), also provides more laughs here. My fave moment in part two has to be the super hilarious ýýOnly Youýý version sang by Tripitika!

Thereýýre plenty of twists and turns that are really different from the original story, which is good since it doesnýýt get boring even if you already know the story of the Monkey King. However, a minus is that youýýll need to know the story of the Monkey King to be able to appreciate and laugh at some of the jokes aimed at the original story, but if you donýýt, thereýýre still plenty of comical parts around to keep you laughing. The funny parts may be rather silly at times, but go ahead and laugh at their silliness. Afterall, Stephen Chow is known to be the King of Comedy. :)

Part two has a stronger romance theme than part 1, and the ending is kind of romantic and nice, albeit a little sad. Chinese Odyssey comes in two parts, so youýýll need to watch part 1 as well to be able to fully understand the entire movie. If youýýre into Chinese mythology and culture, give this a try and take the time to enjoy this show!
